Default Your wish list

The Flames have a ton of cap room, and a great core of young players. Name your top 3 or 4 wishes, here's mine:

1. Trade for Sharp(or sign, think he has one year left, could be wrong) great fit I think. If he's got a year left try to sign him to a Hudler contract.

2. Get a top 4 two way dman. Let Wideman be a 5, pp specialist. Don't get me wrong Wideman was much improved this year. But the bigger minutes need to go to Gio, Brodie, Russell and said signing (or trade). Wideman and Engelland as your bottom pairing with Wotherspoon or Diaz as a 7 is pretty sweet. I have no specific player in mind for this.

3. I swear I would have said this before this series, and he msy have priced himself out of me wanting the Flames to grab him since signing our young guys, and one guy mentioned below, is the better way to go, but sign Matt Beleskey. Great glue guy, second line, all around player, what Bourque/Glencross were when they were on their good streaks.

4. Re-sign Hudler to a fair but not cap killing contract, his leadership has been stellar and he's got a few years of production left I reckon.

Have at 'er CP!

Sign David Schlemko, Andrej Sekera, and Antoine Vermette.

Trade up in the draft and grab Barzal.

Re-sign Gio.

Profit.

A guy like Brent Seabrook or Niklas Hjalmarsson would look great in a Flames jersey.

I would even like guys like Paul Martin or Cody Franson if the price is right.

Another top 3 defenseman is priority #1 for me.

Priority #2 would be a solid 50 point 2nd line player of some sort or another. Justin Williams would be my target if we're going after a UFA. Right Winger and a winner. We don't have any RW beyond Hudler and Jones, so that would help.

Pick a goalie and move the other and allow Ortio the opportunity to establish himself.

We need a battering ram power forward in order to penetrate that Anaheim defence

1.) A top 4 defenseman, ideally one with some size.

2.) A true number 1 goalie.

1) a big, talented winger (Lucic?)
2) a big, mobile defender (Franson?)

My wish list is don't spend too much because we will need a bit of cap space for re-signings in the 2016 offseason.

I want Joel Ward. Big body, right shot, right winger.

UFA:

Defense:
One of Erhoff or Franson. Preferably on a 2 year deal which I think is feasible with Erhoff, May have to offer more term to get Franson to bite.

FWD: Viktor Tikhonov. Big hard forchecking natural RW that can be a decent signing. Could make out to be at worst a 3rd line RW and if my theory is correct and the guy can buy into what Hartley is selling, A 2nd line RW that can score and be a target for Bennett.

I LOVE Mikael Backlund but the Flames really do need a better faceoff specialist in the #3 C spot. Shop him around and see if there's a fit.

Draft:

1st round: Evgeny Svechnikov. 6'3" 205 lbs. Big heavy NHL size ready winger with a sniper shot and immense skill. Screw the Roosky factor, this guy is a great fit. Plays with speed, yet another player to work with Bennett or Monahan down the road.

2nd round: Rasmus Andersson. Had a great year in Barrie with the Colts this year, 6'0" stocky RH D man who is a balanced D man.

Goaltending, I'm still in the keep Hiller camp and let Ortio have the back-up. Also, who knows how Gillies does. Could be a big time surprise in the fall.

Like Summer 2005 when UFA's starting choosing Calgary, I hope this success has opened up Calgary as an option..I am sure it has, but to what degree?

Anyways, a second line that can be counterd on offense more often than not. Players that can play, and score on a 2nd line PP. Bennett will be there eventually, but maybe not next year yet. Two, maybe three guys if can swing it.

The second line PP was atrocious down the the strech.

A top 3 defenseman as has been mentioned.

But all has to do with size. The Flames adapted to the Ducks after Game 1, and then a bit more after 2, by avoiding the hitting and making the puck do the work. But when the Ducks gained the zone, it was a tough go. Feeds into the fact that with only one line able to generate anything momentum and possession wise in the second round (and more or less all season), it's not going to cut it for gaining momentum.

As rosy and as awesome as many have played, hopefully Burke and Treliving make some tough calls....Sutter moving on from 2nd leading playoff scorer and fan favourite in Conroy was huge after June 2004.

Compare that to the Oilers who rewarded Horcoff, Moreau and Pisani with long term, outrageous deals for being 2005 heroes.

If the value for some of these guys is at an all time high, no matter what, then make the deal. Wideman, Hudler, etc...who knows. For better or worse, the development plan has bumped itself up a few notches after this season, as well as team and fan expectations, so a more direct approach to changes this offseason may be coming.

Most of these desires are of the mind "at the right price". The Flames need to keep in mind that they're a rebuilding team and that they currently need to keep cap space available to re-sign their future core.

That being said though, I think the Flames should focus on these:
1) A large and mobile defenceman who can handle large power forwards. This was the Flames' biggest weakness against the Ducks and the Getzlaf line was proof.
2) A juggernaut of a forward to assist with gaining the zone. The other major issue the Flames had was the inability to penetrate the Ducks' defence when they stood them up at the blue line...backed up enough to prevent a dump and chase system but big to really skate past. Maybe Hunter Smith might become this in the future?
3) A 2nd line RW. Jones or Colborne seem like the possible options here and that's quite a restriction.
4) A right handed puck moving defenceman. Diaz was the Flames' only option in this regard and getting a bit of depth in this regard probably will assist the Flames in their quick transition going forward. This would also assist with the fairly awful 2nd PP
5) A centre with strong face-off credentials. This is more of a stretch goal than anything else but the Flames were dominated in the face-off circle.

I don't see the need for a top 4 defenseman. I think we have a great top 4. Bottom pairing for sure though.

1. Size on D
2. Face-off Specialist
3. Best Players Available in draft
4. Most importantly in all cases, High hockey IQ, competitive, character players who won't upset the chemistry of the team.

1 injury and we're screwed in the playoffs. We need another guy to have a redundancy.

We need a #5 that can play #4 if need be.

Martin comes to mind.
