The Ongoing JonDuke Needs Help Thread
Noob time. I have lots of questions and requests for advice. I've had some amazing help thus far with GMs reaching out with advice and tips on what to do with my team, and I am very appreciative of that. But instead of harassing GMs with constant messages on GoogleTalk, I figured I would start a thread for help.
I'm super new to this whole thing, and the learning process is taking its time. I wish I could buy one of you drinks at a pub so I could just bring my laptop, and physically see the advice/day to day moves on my screen, but am out of town every other week, so that's not super easy.
The finances/behind the scenes is where I need to learn the most.
First set of questions:
I am currently over the cap by .96 million.
Where I am clearly rebuilding, should I be looking at trading someone like 35 year old Brian Campbell? High contract, but a decent D who could be a nice addition to a playoff bound team with cap space. Then I could clear up some cap space and sign some young kids and hope for the best.
What are other viable options to get under the cap?
I have no 1st round pick for the upcoming year, and am guessing I should be trying to gain one, through some sort of trade, right?
I think I'm happy with Elliot in net, but should I be moving Dubnyk, and giving the back up to Wegewood or Forsberg instead? (and saving more money)
Salary question:
For the above pic, let's use Lapierre for the example:
He's making $3 million/year, right? (as opposed to 3 million over 2 years)
And what does the 10% mean beside his salary? (and the 25% beside Zubrus)
Lapierre's contract is for 2 years. Does that mean 2 more years after this season, or including this season?
When I send a player down to the farm, is their full salary still counting against my CPHL team, or does it go to the farm team?
Very clueless, I know, but it'll come to me eventually. I think that's it for now. There will no doubt be more questions coming. Hence the thread.

Lapierre yep thats 3 m this year and next
as long as player has 2w beside their contract number, when you send them to the minors their cap hit is not the full amount but whatever percentage is beside the salary
so Lapierre would be 300k in the minors

looking at your roster you could solve your immediate cap issue by waiving to the AHL your one extra under 23 forward and under 23 dman and buying out 2 AHLers you don't care about
thats the short term solution, but obviously you may be better off doing via roster moves
not a bad idea re: moving Dubnyk, realizing that backup goalie is a position of marginal importance, on the other hand that impacts their trade value. Dubnyk is rescuing his NHL career as we speak though so I think you would find interest

actually you have 2 guys who could go on the IR (including one of your AHL goalies). IR them, send down your 7th dman and you are cap compliant while you tackle the bigger issues

On these questions:

- All depends on the return you can get. But yes - he would be a guy I look to move. But make sure you get a decent return. His contract for next year hurts his value though.
I have no 1st round pick for the upcoming year, and am guessing I should be trying to gain one, through some sort of trade, right?
- Depends on your approach. Some GMs really get into the draft, some don't. I wouldn't overpay just to get a 1st. This draft has good buzz around it so it may be tougher to get a decent pick.
I think I'm happy with Elliot in net, but should I be moving Dubnyk, and giving the back up to Wegewood or Forsberg instead? (and saving more money)
- Dubnyk is having a good year in the NHL so his value may increase after a good re-rate in the off-season. Right now I don't think he gets you much.
Overall thoughts
- Goaltending is solid
- D is in pretty good shape too.
- Your forwards are you weak spot, so think about how you can turn Campbell into help up front. You can move him for a similar veteran on a stiff contract but one that can you help up front. You just don't have any front line players. That's what you need to address now or in the off-season.
Your prospect base is pretty terrible, so to some extent you need to decide if you are going to do a quick re-tool or a longer re-build. That then dictates what you do with a guy like Campbell.

Next question:
How come I can see 22 AHL players on my roster page, but they don't all populate on my STHS client?
Edit: And to add to this, on roster page ti shows 6 D, on STHS i show 8 to choose for my lines.
What am I doing wrong?

don't worry about it, it's normal that not every player is in the sim. If a player doesn't have a rating, it's possible that he's not in there ... usually the league will only add players to the sim when they are actually intended to be used.

If you need an Assistant GM, feel free to PM me.
I can show you some roster tricks that would make your (Grant's) head spin.

I notice a few of you have sponsorships.
How does one procure those and how do they work?

at the start of the season, you spend cap space to apply for sponsorships
At the end of the season, you win cap space for next year for any of your sponsorships that you achieve.

BUMP...Re: Waiver Claims
I read the rules and understand that the worst team gets first crack at claiming a waived player, and when you claim, you then go to the back of the line.
Is there a way to see where you currently sit in that line?
Ie: I made a claim on someone. 2nd worst record, and I didn't get it, so I'm assuming it's because the previous GM claimed someone earlier this year. Just wondering if I can see where I currently sit.

I keep the emails of all successful claims and then check to see how has priority. I don't maintain a list.
I'm not sure what claim you are referring to as the league hasn't received any recent claims from you. If this is about Stalberg the only claim was made by St. Louis.

Yeah, I had to double check my email sent box, but I sent one for him on the 2nd. Title was "Waiver Claim - Viktor Stalberg" To cphlufa@yahoo.com. But...I'll still play the newbie card and say there's a good chance I screwed something up on my end, or maybe didn't include the right info, so it's all good. No big deal on my end at all, and I'll wait for the next one.
But thanks for answering the question about the list!!

If you go to your rosters page, along the list at the top is where you claim a waived player.
Second line of Actions, next to waive/send down. enter password and all players currently on waivers appear on a drop list
No email necessary

I didn't know that either. I would have sent an email to the league as well to try to claim.
Good to know!

Bump.
Is there a way to see what UFAs (who have already been released) were making with their previous team?
IE: Even after the re-rates, to get a feel for what kind of offer you should be making?
Been on here lots lately, trying to edumacate myself and strategize a bit.
Just thought of this while scanning the UFA list and can't find anything.
And speaking of the UFA process, can someone explain it more, as far as how the bidding process works? Highest bid that entire week, within 48 hours or something else?
Thanks

No real way to see the previous contracts but I don't know if they would be helpful.
Here's how the UFA process works.
- First we go through the re-rates and RFA re-signing
- After that teams can re-sign their UFAs. They must have the cap space to do so.
- After that we post a series of UFA batches. Basically we take the best UFAs and they go first, then the next set, etc. There is a cross section of goalies, forwards and dmen in each batch
- Teams are given a deadline to submit offers. Offers must include term (up to 3 years), per year $$ figure, and AHL %.
- Teams must have cap space for all of their offers
- Offers are kept confidential until the batch closes
- The player is then awarded based on the following
1. Highest per year $ amount
2. If tied - longest term
3. If tied still - highest AHL%
4. If tied still - team lowest in the standings
I don't think we've ever got to the 4th one - but we've had ties on the first 2 for sure.
So we go through each batch like that. After we get through the main batches we have 2 final rounds. The first is an open batch, for all remaining players, for which teams still must have cap space for their offers. The second is another open batch, for all remaining players where cap space is NOT required.
That's it.
Any questions?
