Default Accepting money from a bet

I won a stupid bet at work the other day.

The topic doesn't matter but I was so sure I was right I told him I'd bet anything. He said $100. I took the bet and immediately proved him wrong. He gave me the brown right then and there, but now my stupid conscience is kinda getting on my case. Do I tell my conscience to take a hike and take my wife out for supper, or give it back maybe?

Fwiw he's not homeless or anything

If it's a freind use it to take him for lunch, or donate it to a charity he supports. But really if they agree and pay up immediately, it's your to do what you want.

You keep the money. Use it to buy a couple of t-shirts. One for you (that says "I was right") and one for him (that says "I was wrong).

Honestly, if you'd have lost the bet, would you have paid up? If so, keep the cash. You're both grownups.

I have an uncle that is constantly saying stupid, stupid things and gets really obstinate when the viewpoint is challenged. He inevitably does the "Let's put money on it" thing, and I always keep the money when I inevitably win.

A fool and his money are soon parted.....

And Vlad nailed it the post above!

Isn't that the point of a bet?

It's insulting to give the money back. Go do whatever you want with the $.

if it were me, i'd take him for lunch to a nice restaurant and have a good laugh over it.

Then everything should be cool.

I'd exchange that $100 to a stack of $5's and slap him with it.

If you want him to save face, go double or nothing on another bet.

Seriously, why would you feel guilty, or want to give it back or want to do something nice for him.

The weak serve the strong, that's the way its always been, that's the way it always shall be.

Do you want to go against the way of the universe?

In fact, what you should be doing is feeling a sense of satisfaction, that you helped guide someone and taught him a valuable lesson. Personally, a 100 dollar bet is minor in the grand scheme of things. the bet should have involved his enslavement and a oath to serve your house for the next 1000 generations.

You gave up the chance for free labor.

Lesson learned.

Take him out for a couple drinks on your tab to laugh about it. Nothing wrong with collecting on a bet!

I lost a goofy bet on the weekend, one that seemed not important and solved right away with google. paid up and never mentioned it again, since it is the EXACT cost of gambling...

Exactly what I would do. Laugh it off over a few brews.

If anything, your buddy's integrity is admirable. I know a few guys who would pretend no bet if they lost. "Oh, it's a figure of speech". But you will be reminded constantly if you lost a bet about how you owe them money.

But I've also met a few who are genuinely surprised when I hand them money on a lost bet. I usually buy them a brew or coffee, or upgrade a gift for them next time I bring them a gift. These guys actually think it's a figure of speech.

I usually give it back for this reason. It's insulting. It says, hey guy, you made a stupid bet and I was so confident in winning that I can't possibly take your money. I basically cheated because you're an idiot!

I'd go with taking him out for lunch, or depending on the size of your department, get pizza or something brought in for everybody. No need to tell everybody why the other guy is buying lunch; just make him the hero.

If it were me, I would walk through the office waving the money around while a ghetto blaster on my shoulder cranks out The Million Dollar Man Ted Dibiase's entrance music.

I'm subtle like that.
