Default Should/will Bob Hartley be fired in the off season? [EDIT: A conversation from 2013]

Just want to say I don't blame Hartey for this disaster, but I still don't think he's the right coach going forward.

We are last in the league in GA and our d-zone coverage is atrocious and it's actually been getting worse.

I don't see a scenario where he isn't fired. Might be time for Troy Ward and I think that will happen in the off season.

He won't be fired. He's the godfather of Feaster's kids.

Besides, as much as I disliked his hiring to begin with it's too soon to start talking about letting him go. He walked into a disaster. If he's still floundering when the Flames have stockpiled some talent worth talking about then he should be canned.

I'm a firm believer that Hartley and Feaster were brought in to win, they didn't (not saying its their fault), but now we need management that would more suit a rebuild.

His preference for playing Veterans over rookies is evident and will not help going forward IMO

I think he stays for at least another year. We clearly can't blame the coach for this teams failure and this coaching staff finally is familiar with the players we have. The only result of the past few coaching changes is a team that that performs worse than they did under the previous coach.

Why would you fire a guy when you know you're going to suck for years. You're going to need someone to weather the lean years... why not him? You're just going to end up having to fire another guy in a year or two anyways. Let the young guys get used to a message for a while.

Should- yes
Will- no

Shouldn't have been hired in the first place he is a bad coach and being buddies with the moron GM shouldn't be the only requirement to getting a NHL HC job.

I think the Flames are going to be fairly mediocre again next year and it would be pointless to fire Hartley because next summer there will just be a new guy helming a failure. Folks will just point out the weakest link in that team and make the argument that we should fire the coach and things will get better....

The bottom line is that this is a very poor roster and a club without a clear managerial direction forward due to meddling ownership. Changing the coach will do very little.

No and no.

40 games with probably the worst team the Flames have iced in about 12 years. I would say he deserves more time.

I could see Feaster gone before Hartley though.

What are your expectations for Hartley and the Flames going forward? There has to be something to measure performance for the future otherwise decisions just become knee jerk reactions.

If he's fired, I don't think Feaster is the man that's going to do it.

For me personally, I want to see young players improve and make some waves under Hartley. As far as I am concerned, the overall win-loss record isn't as important as player development.

In Colorado, Hartley was able to get a lot from the 20-25 age group. I want to see that here. I am not expecting the same success (we don't have Sakic, Forsberg or Bourque), but I want to see players like Backlund, Baertschi and Horak improve their play and stats starting next season.

A couple of more moves and this will be a far more coachable team. Unfortunately, it will be close to, if not, the least talented in the NHL, also.

Tough sledding but getting everyone on the same page would be nice.

You don't fire a coach after a shortened season in which he didn't even get a full training camp and his starting goalie was out for an extended period of time. His preference for veterans is a concern going forward, but pretty much every fanbase in sports says that about their team's coach. Feaster just has to ship out some veterans so that Hartley has no choice but to play the young guys.

Think of it this way: if they did dismiss Hartley, what message would that send to other potential candidates? That the Flames coaching job doesn't last very long.

This.

In a perfect world for myself......Feaster, Hartley and King are all gone. But chances of that happening this offseason are slim and none. I've never seen a worse defensive Flames team before, perhaps the Keenan era. As much as some coaches and fans want offensive, run and gun styles, being the worst defensive team on the planet doesn't win you many games.

This team needs a president who stays out of the GMs chair, a GM who shuts his trap and just gets the job done, and a coach who knows how to balance the offensive and defensive side of the game.

What we have here now is a gong show. And it will probably go on for another year at least.

To answer the question............Hartley will be back next season.

Yeah he needs a chance coaching this new look team. If they buy into playing some team defence like last night, I can't see any reason for getting rid of him. Yeah Kipper played great but the team didn't have any early major breakdowns like in previous games.

If Feaster is fired the new GM may pick someone else but I don't see the point even then as we aren't going to be winning soon anyways.
