Default Dangerous Foods.

So, I've eaten a lot of foods past the expiry dates etc. and thought maybe others had stories they wanted to share.

- I ate some sour cream not too long ago that was about a month past the expiry date.

- I left a huge bag of frozen Costco chicken wings on top of the clothes washer over night when I forgot to put them back in the freezer. So they were room temp. for quite awhile. I cooked them up and refroze the. Have eaten about 20 of them so far, so good.

- I just did the exact same thing with a box of Costco frozen eggrolls. They were out of the freezer for about a day. I threw them back in the freezer and now I'm going to eat a few.

I roll the dice on nothing - I know I waste food this way but I don't die so I'm ok with that.

Bread, cheese, sour cream I'll keep eating until I see a sign of mold.

I am too lazy to wash lettuce or mushrooms before using. I don't think I have gotten sick from anything yet... some minor inconvenience from the lettuce that seemed kind of sandy / gritty.

Getting food poisoning when I was a kid made me super paranoid. I won't eat anything past it's expiration.

The absolute worst is eating food from a dented can. Botulism can kill and you won't know. Rotten milk or meat will be so rancid it will be tough to eat if it will harm you but food in damaged cans often exhibit no signs of corruption until you are dead.

Why a dented can?

Botulism can come from any canned good or honey.

Cause a dented can may have it's air tight seal compromised, whether or not it was at the point of impact, or a strain on the upper seal. Once air gets inside, it can contaminate the food, and allow bacteria to grow till it gets dangerous. Like Botulism.

To be clear, dented or punctured.

Please expand.

Botulism isn't that big of a risk for adults though. Are you really going to start tossing all the food you have with a dented can? I guess it's only 2 or 3 dollars.

I never gave it any thought before... Great more things for me to be paranoid about.

I've made it 33 years on this earth with the "if it's not swollen, it's probably fine" rule and I'm still here. I'm not about to start tossing every can that's got a small dent in it.

If there's no signs of swelling, it's good to go.

Yeah F that S

http://modernsurvivalblog.com/surviv...d-can-is-safe/

Quote:
If a can of food is dented, it may be unsafe to eat it’s food contents and should be discarded – but not all dented food cans are ‘bad’ – some of them may be perfectly safe.
Here’s how to tell the difference if a dented can of food is safe to eat or not…

Knowing how to tell the difference between a safe or otherwise unsafe dented can of food may reduce unnecessary waste and can even save you money by purchasing these (dented) cans which may be on sale for a fraction of the price.
There are four simple ways or guidelines to determine whether a can of food is safe to eat or whether the can should be discarded.

Push On The Top And Bottom Of The Can

If the top or bottom of the can moves or makes a popping sound, the can’s seal has probably been broken and air has made its way inside. Popped cans should be thrown out.
If the can does not make a noise or move when pressing on the top and bottom, it is probably safe to eat (the seal is still good).
BEST Portable Can Opener

Bulging And Bloated Can

If the can of food is bulging and bloated (unlike an ordinary dent), it is not safe. Cans will bulge and bloat when bacteria begins to produce gasses which push the can outward.
BEST Electric Can Opener

Rusted Can

Rust will weaken the integrity of the can and may allow air and bacteria to enter, particularly if the rust does not simply brush off.

Does The Can ‘Spray’ Out When You Open It?

When you open the can – when you puncture the lid with a can opener, it should not spray or explode (as in being under pressure). If it does spray, do not eat the food because it may be contaminated with bacteria. Safe dented cans will open the same as non dented cans.

————————-
Notes:
Particularly avoid buying cans that are dented on the top or bottom, or near or at the seams. This is where the can is weakest – where the main seams of the can are located.
If the can is dented along the side it will probably be safe to eat the food inside, given the checks listed above.
When a can has become dented… the dent, crease, or dimple has weakened the can at that spot – especially a sharp dent. Further metal stress over time may cause the can to leak, so for this reason it is advisable to consume the food from your dented cans first – given the checks above.
Foods that have abnormal odors should not be eaten.
Having said all that, when in doubt, throw it out.

That's why I buy all my canned goods in lead cans.

As far as lettuce goes, just take off the first couple of leaves, and apples just rub on your shirt a couple of times. I don't understand the people that scrub them down with soap and water.

Remember everyone, it is "Best Before" not "Rotten After". Food poisoning could also be the easiest way to 10- 15 lbs and get a couple of days off of work.

edit: the majority of bacteria and dirt are near the stem of the apple, that's the part to watch out for

Yes, the contents of my post were serious........

BTW, I was once told by a medical doctor that I should get my kids vaccinated and that it was not unhealthy to do so, but hell "what would she know right?".

So what's your issue bud? Clearly you follow me around in threads just trying to be contrarian. Because I don't agree with you vehemently on vaccines you just feel like being a d-bag all the time or do you just choose randomly?

See me post something, quickly google something to contradict then post it. It's pathetic really and becoming tired, a months long grudge over an opinion is childish. Cue the dredging up old posts.

I ain't your Bud.

Sad to let you know I don't follow you around the forum. I was responding to you and another poster. I also qouted a modern day survival blog....FFS....it wasn't a serious post.

I don't even need to google after you post something, actually you know what, I am sorry. I should know better than to take the low hanging fruit you put out, even though it is organic and more nutritious......

And complaining about me bullying in 3 2 1......

Have a good afternoon

I just ate what was left in an open container of yogurt that was bb apr 10.
I think yogurt has a bit of fermenting going on anyways, so I'm not worried about this.
