Good on him to do that interview and write the article. Hopefully it serves as a wake up call to the PA and league. These guys spend their whole lives working towards playing in the NHL, once that's over I imagine the lack of purpose and hopelessness would be overwhelming.
Here is an embedded video. Very, very important. Glad to see tough guys open up and get a real discussion going about their physical and mental wellbeing.
This was a very necessary and touching article. I can't believe the NHL doesn't have a program offered to retired players with post concussion issues. Even just a support program would do wonders I'm sure. If it can help prevent something like this, it'll be well worth it.
To play devil's advocate, why is it the NHLs job? Shouldn't that fall to the union????
It is the league that is offering them money to sacrifice their health. That said, you bet the NHLPA should be involved and it is the union's responsibility to ensure that the NHL is living up to that obligation. That's what collective bargaining is for.

Heart breaking... I havnt been able to watch the video yet but i can only imagine how tough it will be.
Currently, I have one of my best friends who is also in the military who did an absolutley incredible and almost unheard of thing in the military and that was admit that he has a substance abuse problem. He is currently at a facility for treatment which i am unbelievably proud of him for.
I dont even want to imagine what things would be like if my winger was gone over something like substance abuse.
To all of those who are or know of someone who is suffering from a substance abuse issue, my heart truly goes out to you and dont ever give on them or yourself.

I would think all involved have a vested interest in supporting players, but do agree that the Union should be driving this. These guys are independent contractors and the union should be the glue supporting these guys.
I remember Warrener saying the minute the season started and he didn't have a contract, his NHLPA logins were locked out and access to resources were significantly reduced. That is brutal, but based on my experience with unions (as a member and later on management side) not a surprise at all. Once the dues stop flowing... see you later.

I think Carcillo talks about the NHLPA and their lack of responsibility. Just hard to hear about people who are looked to be heroes only to have essentially nobody in their time of need.
I just see people blame corporations for problems often, but sometimes the "blame" should go elsewhere. The teams and the players are mutually obligated to previous for each other via contract. Once that's done, you don't see the players offering to help the clubs in any way. The paternal view we have of employers extends too far IMO
Can I ask a sensitive question? Was Montador's death a suicide? It hasn't been talked about much, but did I read that investigators ruled out suicide and foul play soon after. The way Carcillo talked about it in this video made me think it was suicide.
If so, I think it's important to talk about it and acknowledge it. The more it's kept in the shadows, the harder it is for the next guy facing severe depression.
does it really surprise anyone that the NHLPA doesn't appear to care once you are out of the game? once you aren't a due paying member, it appears you are sadly forgot about.... very sad story. Montador seemed like a decent guy.

Suicides often aren't disclosed because they lead to more suicides.
