If you are Klingberg, why do you accept a 7-yr deal. Shouldn't have gone more than 4 yrs.

7 year deal off of his rookie year? Good grief. He was good but he's not Sidney Crosby. The price is okay but it should've been less money for less time -- like 3 - 3.5 for 2 years. Let him establish himself.
If he turns into a big time player in those 7 years it looks brilliant. If he fizzles off after a great rookie year (not uncommon with D-men) then it's a disaster.

Cause he was on a rookie contract and a RFA, and is now guaranteed 30 million dollars?

We've seen deals like this go south more times than naught. He looks very promising but that's a big time commitment for roughly 60 games of service to date. For a team like the stars, you'd think they would be a slightly more conservative with the long term deals right now.

This reminds me a lot of the Josi deal, and no one is saying that's a bad deal now. This kids a stud, and you need to lock these kind of guys up. He put up 40 points as a rookie. This deal is very similar in the dollar figures to Brodie with a little more term

How was he even able to sign that contract after his only (rookie) season? I've never even heard of that before. Can you sign a 1 year entry level deal? The kid is good no doubt, but Stars had better hope he can keep up his play that entire time.

I'm assuming the 7 years starts after his entry level deal expires which I'm sure was 3 years.
Edit: signed in 2011 and was loaned to Finish Elite League and played in Swedish Hockey League. That's how this is the final year of 3 year entry deal.

Can't sign him prior to July 1st because he has another year left on his contract.

That is INSANE for a guy who has only ~60 career games under his belt.

Just checked, looks like he signed the entry level contract back in 2013, just didn't make the NHL until this season.

7 years is a bit risky... But if he plays the way he did in his Calder year or better, then the Stars got themselves a wicked deal.

Well Gaudreau has only played 20 more and I'm sure most of us would be very happy if Gaudreau signed a similar deal in the summer.
