Default NHL Network Canada terminating September 1.

"Bad news last week for about 20 staffers at NHL Network Canada. They were told league is closing Canadian operation Sept. 1.."

"When Rogers deal struck, NHL slid the 40 games NHL Network Canada carried to Rogers for 2014-15. That doomed the operation."

Being broadcasted in SD didn't help their viewership either.

I'm not shocked at all. When it first came out I watched hoping it would turn into something special but I haven't watched it in years.

Not having the channel in HD was just a stupid decision. Someone should have been fired for that decision alone. I didn't mind the channel. I like all the game summaries every night. It's a good channel to have in the background. But they should have left the old format where when they showed the highlights, it was the original broadcast clips and it showed every single goal. Not the newer format with the studio commentary overlaid on top of it and it didn't always show all the important plays.

In the end the channel seemed like an afterthought for the league. Which is a shame because I liked watching it at the end of the day as a summary of the days events. They also had some great interviews with players and often showed the post game press conferences. But clearly having a superior broadcast was low on the priority list for the league. I thought they did a fine job for what limited resources they had.

While I'm sure the channel had some fans of the format like yourself, I doubt the decision to not take it to HD was a mistake. They likely saw investing in HD production for that channel as a way too expensive investment in that type of content. They likely new investment in a channel that provides nothing their fan base can't get from aps. Or inline in real time was not smart, and doomed for extension regardless of production quality.

The NHL Network channel in the USA is in HD. I have been told that the reason the HD feed was not offered in Canada was due to very high licensing fees that cable and satellite were not going to pay.

Is there a possibility that the U.S. nhl network will feed into canada? It is much better!

Sd is what we consider low definition now. 10 years ago it was our "hd".

If you have a tv connected to a Xbox/PS/Yoku/slingtv/AppleTv/Smart tv etc..... You could just use the NHl Gamecentre.

Geez, what a bummer that the channel was executed poorly.

I will say that for us living in the States, NHL network is the only good source of hockey coverage as all the other sports networks give the sport the most cursory of coverages. I miss being able to watch some of the in depth coverage that the Canadian sports networks provide, and it is especially maddening because most online clips on their websites are censored by regional blocks. At least NHL network shows Hockey Central @ Noon.

Ya, I'm happy it's gone. I paid for it more than once just because there was one or two things I wanted to see on it. It was in SD which really sucked and they seemed to play the same thing over all day except one or two programs. It just came off as an after thought with not much effort put into it.

SD was never anyone's HD (it was the original TV standard). Amazing it took 50 years to up the resolution! Hopefully 4 and 8K are adopted much more quickly.

Nope. At least, not without Rogers' support, and I don't see that happening. At the very least, any live game broadcast on the channel would have to be blacked out.

It hasn't been the standard for a lot longer than 10 years.
