Default SmoothVideoProject - makes everything look 60fps

So I recently discovered http://svp-team.com/

Basically it uses frame interpolation to increase the frame rate of videos be creating intermediate frames. It sounds like it wouldn't work very well, or would have a lot of annoying ghosting or artifacting... but it's really incredible.

Hard to show it in examples, but watch this on 1080p60fps settings:

Worth checking out IMO.

Moved. Don't some TVs basically do this? Or I guess maybe they don't do interpolation and rather just show each frame twice (or 4 times or whatever for really high framerate tv's)?

If you show the same frame twice, wouldn't it still look like it's not moving so it shouldn't make it any smoother?

Yeah, that doesn't sound like it wouldn't make it smoother.

But the SVP website says this is indeed similar to what high-end TVs and projectors can do.

But it legitimately makes 24fps videos look 60fps on my computer, its really neat!

You are right.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_interpolation

Would of helped I guess if I'd read the website linked

SVP allows you to watch any video on your PC using frame interpolation (as it is available on high-end TVs and projectors).

Oh boy, so long 24 frame cinematography, hello 60 frame Soap Opera-mode. :barf:

The only things that ever looks even remotely okay at 60+ fps (with the obvious exception of video games), are sports and *some* CGI animated movies.

Really? Maybe it depends on the genre, but I just watched Bloodsport (a classic), and it looked great in 60fps.

Seems funny to me that although technologies continue to advance, there's still a preference for a frame rate first used in the 1920s.

Part of it is psychological, 24fps has meant "movie" or "suspend disbelief here" since the first time going to a theatre for almost all of us.

I think a bigger part is just that 24fps hides so much it's easier to see it as a fantasy world rather than a window looking into someone's living room, and it's easier to see things are just the minimum possible prop or effect to do the job.

I think the higher frame rates will become standard but processing and cgi and practical effects will all probably go through a process of changes until they get to something that accomplishes the goal of transporting the viewer to another world while being the higher quality.

Except that it's a terrible feature on new TV's. My new Samsung had it enabled by default and it made movement very jerky and could cause audio to go out of sync when someone was talking. Also trying to watch hockey with it on was terrible as it could cause the puck to disappear

I can see that, though real 60fps hockey looks awesome.

No doubt, I want everything to be filmed in 60fps ASAP. It's still tempting for me to turn on that motion smoothing feature because when it works well, it looks awesome. There's just too many glitches with it right now though

60 fps sports for sure, but for movies and cinematics I prefer the lower framerate as I feel it allows your eyes to focus more on what matters instead of noticing random things in the shot.
