Default Moving to London (UK)

Anyone lived here before?

Any tips for a newbie?

I've love to know if there's a bar in town that I could watch Flames games at!

I moved to London last year. Are you moving with a job waiting for you or do you need to find one?

If you are looking for a place to live check out spareroom.co.uk as it's great for finding flatshares. All the locals hate anywhere south of the river but there are some really great areas down there such as Clapham. And don't worry about living close to the tube, the bus system is good and way cheaper.

If you're not a soccer fan I suggest becoming one, no other sport really matters here. And meeting locals here is tough as most work London hours and already have their own friends so aren't looking for new ones. Try the Meetup app as it's great for meeting new immigrants to the city.

And finally the Maple Leaf sucks. It rarely shows hockey, none of the bar staff even cares about hockey and it's very expensive. Go once in awhile for a bit of Canadian nostalgia and if your lucky a hockey game but otherwise avoid it.

be prepared to drink often, at any time of day, it's a serious drinking culture. My daughter was amazed that they sell booze on the trains.

Also be prepared to not tip for your pint. I worked in a pub for a summer, I don't think I made more than 10 pounds the whole time. And its not because I'm not cute.

Most Flames games are on in the middle of the night when almost all the bars and pubs are closed. Subscribe to NHL Gamecenter and you can watch games live or recorded from earlier. There are various places that show North American sports including NHL games (the Bodeans BBQ chain for instance) but it will be a day or two later which means you would have to stay away from CP until then if you want to enjoy the game!

I'm not in London anymore (now outside closer to Cambridge) but still work in central London.

I can echo what others have said, go for GameCenter then put yourself on media blackout until you can watch.

The MapleLeaf is a Canadian themed pub, but not the place to reliably watch hockey. Bodeans is awesome, but I couldn't see going there to 'catch the game'. They always have NBA on when I've been in.

What will you be doing here? Happy to help with other general suggestions/connections etc.
