Default Wearing a Flames Jersey in Edmonton

So next weekend I am going up to Edmonton for the first time ever and on a game day I'd like to wear my jersey. I'm just wondering how badly I'd get harassed if at all seen spotting red in West Edmonton Mall?

Now while it's nice to rub it in, it's not like I'm gonna be walking around with a ####-eating grin on my face or anything, I will just be out and about doing my business with my friends. Rubbing it in is an after-thought and it's mostly that I'd love to support my team for our return to the playoffs.

We'll be stopping in Red Deer for a hot minute to get Timmies but I'm not worried about that because I was born there and Red Deer is Floilers territory.

I expect I will actually see a few Flames jerseys in West Ed on a game day though.

Any stories from you Edmontonians/people who have lived up north and don your Flames gear?

It'd be weird if anyone tried to challenge me though. I'm a small girl.

You'll be fine.

Nobody cares about the Oilers anymore.

I live in Edmonton and wear my jersey and rarely get harassed anymore. I wore it to school yesterday and got more thumbs up than anything. There really isn't much they can say anymore and they know it, the Flames this year are everything the Oilers wish they had been for the past 5 years.

You might get a jab or two but wear it with pride!

(Just don't wear it with sweatpants or they might think you are a local gone bad.)

Back when I was in university from 2003-2011, I got harassed for about the entire time except the last couple years when it was waning. Edmonton fans are too depressed. You might get a few beaks but it's pretty easy to have a comeback these days.

St. Albert is where calgarians live when they work in Edmonton; plus the iggy thing so I have been seeing a few flames shirts. not many car flags yet though but that will come.

there are many flames fans up here and probably lots of travelers in West Ed so you will be ok.

first trip to Edmonton though...did you get your vaccinations all done?

Last time I wore my jersey was when the flames/oilers played each other. During the day was fine, and Calgary actually lost the game so I got made fun of a bit afterwards.

With all that said, Edmonton fans seem pretty respectful for the most part. Sure we rib each other a bit but you can tell it's all in good fun and nobody is taking themselves too seriously.

Oh yeah you're fine. My girlfriend is a teacher and wore hers to work yesterday. Be careful of car flags when leaving your car parked, there's always idiots around. But it's not like trying to pull it off in a place like Vancouver.

And as mentioned, I don't think that they even realize the season is still going on in Edmonton. Most have totally checked out.

Some Vancouver fan gave me $10 once as I was taking the Sky Train to GM Place to watch a game in my flames gear and cowboy hat couple years ago. He thought it was the most awesome thing wearing a cowboy hat with a jersey. He kept insisting and I kept refusing because he was a dirty looking guy.

I don't think I actually took the money but I can't remember. I believe that was the night Leland Irving beat them.

Ahaha, thank you for all the responses. This has helped a lot.

I was mainly concerned because with our recent success paired with their awfulness, I was mostly afraid that butthurt would cause a bit of a hostile environment towards me in enemy territory. Though that same argument could be used to say they wouldn't really have anything to chirp me with.

What is an Oiler fan seriously going to say though? Unless it's someone with an underlying mental condition who plans on having an actual altercation, you'd have to be a masochist to trade sports jabs that contain any semblance of fact at this point. Our rebuild is not over.. But we are officially 8 years (and counting, mind you) ahead of them in reaching a very important milestone.

Going to Edmonton, don't forget to pack your sweat pants so you can fit in at least a little bit.

I do sales in Edmonton with a Flames jersey every 3rd week of the month, they're a broken bunch. It's not hard to 'play it off' while still ribbing their team.

Ahhh, lovely.

The game david moss scored when khabibulin came out to play it (overtime?) I was wearing my jersey on whyte and threatened several times afterwards. Since then tho i havent heard much when i wear it. The odd bar girl "ewww hes wearing a flames jersey" sorta comment but nothing serious. All my friends up there have stopped even talking abouf hockey this season. They didnt even comment on us making it

I've never had a problem. You'll get the sneers and the dumb jokes they think are clever, but on the flip side you also get people coming up saying, 'I like Edmonton but I can respect Calgary' and want to talk hockey.

Now the eighties. That was a suicide pact. Or so I heard.
