I know very little about how faxing works and am wondering if it is possible to fax through a wireless network. I have an ADSL wireless network in my home. Right now it's a dedicated line with no microfilters and no phone attached but obviously there is a phone line.

Will this be enough to send and receive faxes from regular fax machines or do I actually have to have the phone line hardwired into my laptop?

Thanks in advance.

The only way I can think of is to use one of the online fax services. ie www.efax.com. You can receive faxes for free, but you might need to pay to send.

There is software out there that you can use to fax from your pc. My friend tells me that Windows XP has a fax program but you have to manually install it. I've never looked into it to see if it is true though. However, there are other fax programs. Try downloads.com and search for fax software. You may find some freeware versions that you could try out.

If you have a Windows XP CD, go to Start > Printers & Faxes > On the left click "Setup Faxing".

For all that windows fax crap you need a fax modem, and you need it to be plugged into a phone line.

Faxing != Internet

To send and receive on a PC there's a few ways to do it:

Have to have a physical phone line with a modem on the PC. This would use the built in faxing software in Windows.

Subscribe to a service like efax which has software that lets you send and receive faxes via your computer without a modem or phone line connection (costs $).

Or some multifunction printers operate as a fax server as well. The one I have I can send faxes out through without having a phone line connected to my computer.

No matter which way you do it, because fax machines are hooked to phone lines at some point a physical phone line has to be involved.
