Default QOTD: Are the Blues meddling in the wild card standings?

Allen has made 33 starts so he's no a chump
Tarasenko and Steen are obviously banged up

But would they be playing if it was the Kings in town tonight? Would Elliot? Are the Blues meddling in the wild card standings by not icing the best lineup possible against the Flames?

None of the West powerhouses want the Kings around, likely first round opponent or not.

Absolutely not, they are doing what they think is best for the Blues. They don't care who gets what wild card spot as much as they care about ensuring their own team is ready for the postseason. Just common sense.

And no team is going to throw games in an attempt to mess with the standings.

No chance. They are far from secure in their playoff position, insofar as who they may meet. Throwing a game to the Flames might mean playing Nashville or Chicago in the first round.

I think it's probably a bit of both. I'm sure they actually have minor injuries, but if this game was crucial they would probably be expected to play through it.

Nope. Just getting ready for the playoffs and resting banged up players. Can't win in the playoffs unless your best players are healthy. They haven't clinched, but they are virtually in.

Every team does it. The habs didn't play price against the jets and that screwed us over, it's about time we benefit from this too.

Can't see them purposely throwing a game ever. They are doing what they think is best for the long haul.

This is always about the time where you see teams who are clinched wanting to rest a few of their main guys. I suspect we may see more of it particularly in the East.

This. I don't think they're meddling per se, but everybody and their dog wants the Flames in over the Kings. So they're viewing this game as not as important, which means they can rest up a bit.

Yeah, no chance.

They are holding onto home-ice advantage in the playoffs by only 1 point and are only 4 points out of 1st in the division with 2 games in hand on Nashville.

I don't think they are relaxing yet.

This combined? They're trading short term risk for better long term reward. That being said, even with those guys out against us, IMO, they still have a very good chance.

Or maybe Steen/Tarasenko are closing in on bonuses and management is cheap.

ETA: This is a joke.

Good teams have the luxury of resting players before the playoffs, and the Blues are exercising that privilege.

Nobody says it can't be a win/win though!

I can't see them being desperate to win. They probably don't want to catch Nashville and play the Wild. I'm sure they'd like to stay ahead of Chicago for home ice.

I do think if it meant playing Calgary or LA in the first round, they might consider some meddling. They are not going to throw a game with consideration of their second or third round opponent though.

Yeah, if something was truly on the line these guys would be on the ice, they're just resting guys up for the playoffs.

I know fairly close three former NHL players, one of whom is a good friend, one is his close friend/ex-teammate and the third one is a just an acquaintance. I've asked the question of a possibility of intentional team tanking by the players and all three of them flatly rejected the suggestion outright based on a variety of factors; mostly because of simple pride and because of each individual player having a different contract situation at the end of the season and his teammates always wanting to help them improve it. On the other hand, if the management wants to "help" the team to get lower in standings, they always can do it honestly and legally correct by playing backup goalies and 3rd & 4th lines a bit more, once the playoff picture is more or less clear. This serves two purposes: to get your best horses a little more rest and reduce their chances of getting injured prior to playoff and, sometimes, to influence the standings of other teams. Frankly, I don't see much wrong in this. This is business.

Whether the Kings make it or not, it doesn't matter for the Blues. They are dead in round 1.

I think they are being extra cautious, but not messing around to try and get the Kings out.

This is the time of year when teams at the top rest their guys if they are even the slightest bit injured. Or tired in the case of goalies. I just see it as caution. Maybe extreme caution, but caution.

To add, it's in our favor, so either way, I likey. Yes there's something to be said about competition and playing the best at their best, but the Flames deserve a break. They have played hard all season, and hard without Gio. A little luck or 'good karma' is well deserved at this point.

It's still going to be a real tough game.
