Confirmed: the US government has a massive program to track all phone calls
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013...on-court-order
It's been rumoured for a long time, but now it's confirmed.
Quote:
The National Security Agency is currently collecting the telephone records of millions of US customers of Verizon, one of America's largest telecoms providers, under a top secret court order issued in April.
The order, a copy of which has been obtained by the Guardian, requires Verizon on an "ongoing, daily basis" to give the NSA information on all telephone calls in its systems, both within the US and between the US and other countries.
The document shows for the first time that under the Obama administration the communication records of millions of US citizens are being collected indiscriminately and in bulk – regardless of whether they are suspected of any wrongdoing.
|
No reason to think that they've stopped at Verizon.
Thoughts?

The government should use this technology to track down all telemarketing firms and shut them down.

ECHELON or whatever it is officially known as has been around for a long time. Canada must do it too. CFS Leitrim, Masset, Gander, Alert aren't exactly well hidden. No reason to think they are only listening in to foreign or terrorist conversations.

"Just because you're paranoid does not mean they're not out to get you".
More seriously though, it is sad how the supposed pillar of freedom and democracy is in such a sorry state when it comes to civil rights.

Scary and sad. Where does the line get drawn?

I find it peculiar that the court order for this was top secret. You would expect something of this nature would require disclosure to the public.

What a bunch of crap.
Complete violation of rights and privacy. The US government is getting pretty scary.
Top secret court order?

By definition, in a democracy then, it's not wrong?

An expert in this aspect of the law said Wednesday night that the order appears to be a routine renewal of a similar order first issued by the same court in 2006. The expert, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive issues, said that the order is reissued routinely every 90 days and that it is not related to any particular investigation by the FBI or any other agency.
The expert referred to such orders as “rubber stamps” sought by the telephone companies to protect themselves after the disclosure in 2005 that widespread warrantless wiretaps could leave them liable for damages.

You'd think people would be more upset. On what grounds did a court issue an order to collect telephone information on ordinary citizens who have been accused of no crimes? Where was the probable cause?
If they do it for phones, what else are they doing it for?
Time for me to invest in the American tin-foil industry because they just might have a point.
