This method results in the Edmonton Oilers getting a higher draft pick. For that entirely objective reason, it's hopelessly flawed and should be discarded immediately.

I still see that as encouraging tanking. Just in reverse. Start off bad, pick it up after Christmas, here's a prize.
Draft lottery should be unweighted. All non playoff teams get the same odds, top 3 picks are drawn, rest fall in based on standings. I'm sorry, but if you're team can't get better with a handful of top 10 picks over a few years, there's some deeper issues than talent alone. Yes. I'm looking at you Edmonton.

I think the draft system will be fine next year once they turn to the NBA style and let all teams that don't make the playoffs have a chance for the top 3 picks. It's hard to justify tanking an entire season going in, knowing you may/may not finish last...and even if you do, you still could potentially picked at #4.

Keep the same odds but put more picks in the lottery. I'd prefer all 14 picks be lottery but even if you made it the top 5 picks then the worst team would likely pick 3rd or 4th. The change next year to 3 lottery picks should help a lot.

I agree with this. This year's an especially wierd year because even second place is still pretty much the most exciting draft pick in nearly a decade.

How about a poll listing the various options, including the statis quo?

I'm interested in a couple of systems:

Points earned after elimination

Tournament amongst non-playoff teams (like NITs).

The real way to fix it is to not give the oilers a first round pick. The only reason other teams tank is because they're tired of seeing the oilers ruin young player after young player. If the oilers didn't get a top 10 pick, other teams would actually try to make the playoffs instead of try to out-suck the oilers.
Edmonton is no good.
