Icon48 GMs agree to recommend 3v3 OT & coaches' challenge for goalie interference

Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
Recommendations will be made to introduce coaches challenge and 3 on 3 overtime.

Nick Cotsonika @cotsonika
Chiarelli: NHL will look at either AHL OT or 3-on-3 for five minutes.

Nick Cotsonika @cotsonika
Chiarelli: NHL will look at some type of coach's challenge for goalie interference. Refs would work with hockey ops.

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
Tablet or monitor to be added for refs for a coaches' challenge-style event with goaltender interference. Lose a timeout if wrong...

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
Also, there will discussion about NFL-style setup where in last minute, everything gets reviewed.

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
Also, refs will have final say on the call.

On 3 v 3, it looks like they are still debating whether to do a 7 minute OT with 4v4 that turns into a 3v3 after a few minutes like the AHL or just a straight 3v3 5 min OT.

Still has to go through NHL BOG and competition committee before the changes happen next season.

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
More on challenge for goaltender interference: can only be used on a goal, can't be used to call a penalty (only goal/no-goal)...

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
And if a coach had no time-outs, can't call for a challenge.

I want offsides on a goal being a challenge option too. I see too many missed offside calls on good goals.

I think our current lineup would do VERY well in a 3v3 scenario, with their speed and creativity, there'd be lots of room for them to have some fun.

I would like them to have an icing call waived off on a delayed offside. It would create a lot more offensive chances and see a lot more teams trying to go for the home run pass when a guy is trapped in the offensive zone on an offside.

Not sure about the ref having final say on overturning their own calls.

Would love to see it on the penalty side! I think this is where it makes the most sense. goal/no-goal is pretty easily solved with with the technology and review process they have already.

I like the coaches challenge but I would hope it's one a game and like football you lose your time out with a failed challenge. As said above should be applicable to offside and 2-line passes in addition to goaltender interference. I would also consider adding it to challenge dives in the event of phantom high sticks where players snap their heads back.

This is probably the most significant piece of news but will receive the least discussion.

Who's screwed? I wish Capgeek was still a thing.

The technology is for goal crossing the line/high stick/kick in, not for goalie interference, whcih is what the challenge is about.

I do think they could use it for some other non-subjective penalties like high sticking, too many men, maybe tripping, or offside leading to a goal if the puck never goes back out and back into the zone.

Good to hear an update on this.

I think a 5 minute 3 on 3 would work better. It seems like a more concrete rule than 7 minutes split into 4 on 4 and then 3 on 3.

I'm shocked it's not dropping. I guess the Rogers money is offsetting the drop in the Canadian dollar? Any other significant new revenue streams?
