Default NE Hotel Shooting

One person dead so far - other than that, not much in the way of details yet.

Yikes. I grew up a few minutes from there.

It's sad but you'll always get this type of stuff in a big city. Comes with the territory.

CPS killed him, sounds like it could be suicide by cop.

Quote:
The Calgary Police Service first responded to a call from the staff of a motel on Barlow Trail and Sunridge Boulevard with reports of strange behaviour at approximately 3pm Monday afternoon.

Officer arrived on scene and approached the room which they were unable to enter because of a locking mechanism, but were able to see the man, who appeared to be agitated and in medical distress.

It was at this point that officers, due to what they say were exigent circumstances, took action to enter the room to provide assistance, but were confronted with an alleged high risk situation.

A less lethal force which was used to subdue the man was ineffective and an officer discharged his firearm when the situation escalated.

The man died on scene and no officers were injured.

At this point, the investigation is in its initial stages and details are limited.

I realize in light of the situation it is hardly important but sometimes police releases are strange in how formal they are

"and approached the room which they were unable to enter because of a locking mechanism"

Ummm, so they couldn't enter the room because the door was locked?
What's wrong with just saying that.

When I worked in radio news the worst thing was junior anchors would go to air and read it the way the releases were written. Which sounds absurd.

Agreed I had to re-read that 3rd last paragraph. "A less lethal force was used..." sounded odd. Just weird sentence structure.

I took that to mean the internal locks that hotel room doors typically have on them, not just the regular locked door that they could open with a master key.

I was thinking that as well, and perhaps that's the way that they were able to see into the room that the guy was in distress.

Yeah, when I saw "locking mechanism" but that they were still able to see in, I was thinking the door was locked with the chain.
