Flames Flames prospects relish visit to NHL press box

If you didn't know Hickey, Gillies, Gilmour and Jankowski attended tonight's game against the Bruins.

http://calgaryherald.com/sports/hock...-nhl-press-box

Quote:
The blue-liner, meanwhile, is enjoying a fine first campaign, 14 points — and plus-16 — in 33 outings.

“It’s been a good season for myself so far,” said Hickey. “With a lot of freshmen coming in, you get a lot of opportunity to play. I couldn’t ask for anything more. I love the situation. I love my team. I love my coaches. Everything is going really well this year.

“The coach (David Quinn) has a lot of confidence in me, so he’s playing me quite a bit for a freshman. So it’s been nice.”

Quote:
So — after his junior season — does the six-foot-five Gillies leave Providence and sign with the Flames?

“That (decision) will come after the season,” replied Gillies, who, this season, is 19-11-2, with a 2.00 goals-against average and a .929 save percentage. “That’s handled between them and the adviser that I work with, at this point. That’ll all play itself out. My job is to stop pucks on the ice.”

Quote:
“The sky’s the limit for the Flames right now,” said Hickey. “It’s pretty cool. I’ve never been in a press box before. A new experience for me and pretty cool seeing a game from up here. Way different than being on the ice.”

On the ice, he has been likened to T.J. Brodie, another strong-skating, puck-moving defender.

“That’s a pretty good comparison, for sure,” said Hickey. “I watch a lot of hockey and I have a few defencemen I love watching. Like Drew Doughty. But I more try to model my game after a guy like Ryan McDonagh. He plays big minutes for New York. I just love watching him play.”

I don't know much about Hickey but it appears he's having a pretty solid season does anyone know his upside?

Sounds like Gillies is going to sign in the off season or when Providences season is over.

He is pretty much a TJ Brodie clone.

A more physical 6'2 TJ Brodie with a quicker release. Probably not as good on his backhand.

He seems to like being a college athlete in Boston more than being a teenager in Leduc.

Shocking.

Of his 2012 third-round draft pick, general manager Jay Feaster once said he was so impressed that he was ready to sign him after his first year of school.
Oh my lord Jay, what was the rush.

Anyways, before this thread gets inevitably thrown into negative disarray, gets Jankowski'd, turns to Sven Baertschi, or Hunter Smith's height being a negative gets discussed I'll say what a nice little article it was and it must have been a cool experience for those players. Still rivals currently but knowing they're paths might come together down the line.

Definitely a nice read, I only wish it was a bit longer and Cruickshank had the chance to talk with all 4 prospects extensively, I'd like to know if Jankowski's should injury has affected his season and how Gilmour's injury is healing. Or maybe he did talk to them more and more pieces are coming about the kids, that would be great too.

All indications were that he wanted to sign after last season, but that the Flames preferred to have him spend more time in college. I suspect that the ball is in the Calgary's court again this year. Hopefully we sign him, because I think he's ready for the next step.

Good, I want to find 1 more. So we can have a TJ Brodie on the ice at all times.

Any doubts that Gillies will with the Flames? I think he's one of our top prospects that gets overlooked.

No, none at all. Would be very surprised if he didn't turn pro with the Flames this year. With Ortio probably seeing NHL duty next season, there's a nice opportunity in Stockton for Gillies.

Gilmour, Kulak & Culkin all have the potential to be our 3rd-pairing TJ Brodies.

Our scouts have definitely targeted a certain style of defenceman, and Hartley's team strategy suits that type of player.

Question how did they get to the press box. Didnt we try and get Jonny and Arnold to a game last year in Boston but there were not allowed to?? or am I wrong. Wonder how they were able to get these 4 there?

ramo or hiller next year?
personally i think the best thing to do asset management wise would be to sign ramo and trade hiller as he would still have another year of term. flames could even retain salary, and get another 2nd at the draft per chance?

Jankowski could be on a similar path to Colborne. Colborne had better numbers in the NCAA at the same age, but their styles of play are very similar. I think with patience Jankowski could develop into an NHLer -- but he likely won't live up to his draft potential.
