Ramo On The Road
Interesting article in the Sun talking about Ramo having the best road record of all NHL goalies.
Karri Ramo, Calgary Flames (1.87, .938)
Corey Crawford, Chicago Blackhawks (1.94, .931)
Carey Price, Montreal Canadiens (2.02, .932)
Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers (2.05, .928)
Marc-Andre Fleury, Pittsburgh Penguins (2.19, .920)
Pekka Rinne, Nashville Predators (2.30, .920)

Pretty good company, though all of those guys have a way bigger sample size I imagine.

I wouldn't have thought his numbers were "elite" on the road.

We should probably resign Ramo and give him every road game next year. Hiller can play all the home games.

Gonna be interesting to see if the Flames will be able to re-sign Ramo. Might be able to get a full starter role somewhere else.

Who's Ramo's road roommate? Better get him living with Ramo at home too.

Nah, just stick the two of them in a downtown hotel the night before a home game. I think that's what Sutter did with the entire team for Game 6 vs SJ in 2004.

I honestly think home/road splits are mostly just random fluctuations. I understand that home/road does have some bearing on the likelihood of winning, but I really think it's overplayed.
So in this case, Ramo's good games happen to be clustered into road games this year. Nothing more than coincidence.

I don't think home/away plays much into Ramo's success, so his numbers are probably a coincidence.
I do think Hartley is a big matching coach, and with the differences in defnsive play among defenceman and forwards on Calgary, home ice is probably a bigger blessing for the Flames than for elite teams, or crap teams for that matter.

As I've been saying for a while, I don't know why people were in a rush to get rid of Ramo. I get some of it was asset management, but...
It's not like Hiller was lights out better than Ramo. They've both had stretches of brilliance, and both had luke warm stretches. And as for Ortio, way to small a sample size to get excited about. Or, excited yes, but to plan on, no.
The way I'd do it is sign Ramo (as long as the price isn't crazy, which it shouldn't be), and go with the same tandem next year. Then you still have two goalies that can push each other, and you still have Ortio in the wings to jump up in case of injury or if someone goes off the rails. One of two, will probably happen. I'm thinking, the situation handles itself.
But say we get the problem of all three of them playing well, then we simply have an additional asset we can trade, and we can look at what makes the most sense for us at the time, taking into account age, ceiling predictions, and possible returns. It'd be a good problem to have. Plus we get the chance to ease Ortio into it, and make sure we aren't putting all our eggs into one basket.

if Ramo is still around next year. Ramo plays ALL away games while Hiller plays ALL home games.

Most of it was just the idea of Ortio drawing in full time, and Ramo having been coming back from injury at the time.
Never mind numbers, Ortio simply "looked" like the best goalie we've had all season. The other two have had hot stretches where you still get nervous about positioning or rebounds or what-have-you but with Ortio there was a sense of calm we got. Even the Anaheim game, you couldn't actually fault Joni for the goals against.

Yeah, but goalies are sooo hard to judge. Of all the positions, you probably need the most games to truly analyze, and even then it can be a bit of a crap shoot. I think when we first got Brathwaite he won his first two games. The first of which was a huge shutout against a Dallas team at the height of their history, and the second might have been a shutout too. But he was never a top 15 goalie, and often, not even a number one.
Don't get me wrong, I loved Freddy, mostly because what we went through with goalies that year, but often goalies come up and are lights out, and then settle into what they truly are. The hardest part about being a goalie is consistency, a big part of which is confidence. That can get shattered so easily.
Seeing Ortio play well in a few games really wasn't that surprising to me. Freddy did it, Turek did it, Kipper did it. Kipper was the only one to be able to keep it going.
Would much rather ease Ortio in. That is both good for us, should he falter, and good for him, should he falter. He may very well be our best, with the highest ceiling. In that case, let's not screw it up.
Don't forget, before this year, he had some real bad ones too. He almost didn't make the dance.
