Flames @ Flyers. - Gaudreau's Home coming - 5:00pm MT SNW
via the Flyers:
Quote:
The Flyers come into today six points behind the Bruins, who do not play tonight, for the final wild card spot… This is the second of a three-game homestand for the Flyers, who won the first, 4-2 vs. Rangers on Feb. 28… The Flyers have also won three straight games on home ice and have earned points in the standings in nine of their last 10 home games, going 7-1-2 since Jan. 20… Overall, the Flyers own an 18-8-5 record at home - a win tonight would ensure a winning record on home ice for an eighth straight season at the Wells Fargo Center and 20th winning season at home in the last 21 years… With 19 games remaining, Jakub Voracek is tied for the NHL’s scoring race with three other players (Ovechkin, Tavares & Backstrom) at 65 points.
The Flames have dropped three of their last four games and are in a tie for the third and final guaranteed playoff spot in the Pacific Division with Los Angeles and San Jose at 70 points, however Calgary has more regulation/overtime wins for the tie breaker - the Western Conference Wild Card spots are both currently held by the Central Division at 73 points… The Flames recently lost captain, defenseman Mark Giordano, for the remainder of the season with a torn bicep tendon he suffered on Feb. 25 at NJ… Prior to his injury, he was tied for the team lead in scoring with 48 points, which is still tied for second among all NHL defensemen… His 37 assists and 48 points were all career highs… With 20 games remaining in their season, the Flames are two wins and seven points shy of equaling their total wins (35) and points (77) mark from last season.

Excited to see how the team does without Gio. I want to see if they come out inspired or if they seem defeated. I don't think they'll play much different as the team seems to just have that competitive edge. I still think they'll play really well until the end of the year.

With Granlund sent down, Shore replaces him on the Scorch line...

Interesting if they move Gaudreau off the Mony/Hudler line. I think it is time to shake it up a bit. They all need to pick up the offensive pace on the road trip.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

I would prefer Gaudreau with Backlund but hopefully this gets Jooris going!

Interesting dropping Johnny off the top line for tonight. Presume the thought process there is either:
- he'll be drawing the Flyer's top pairing since he's been hyped for this game big time, give Moneyhands and Hudler the 2nd pairing
- try to avoid the Flyers' top pairing so he can try to live up to the aforementioned hype

Probably also that the G-M-H line wasn't producing points (even though they had their chances), and they're trying to mix things up to provide some offence.

I think Johnny is wasted with Jooris. If he is not with Monahan I would rather play him with Backlund. If you are going to play him with Jooris you might as well throw Ferland or Bollig on the other wing.

Seems like their two way styles would mix well but both of them like to carry the puck. Backlund is doing well between Jones and Bouma. Either winger will dump and chase while crashing and banging whereas Backlund has the skill to carry it in as well.

somewhat off topic... but, that Weber's Drive In below the billboard was on a rerun of Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives the other night...
4-1 Flames tonight!

Jooris brings a lot of hustle and energy that I find Backlund only shows in spurts. Gaudreau is going to be pumped up for this game, guys on his line are going to have to keep up.
On that note I'd put Poirier on the other wing instead of Colborne.

personally i think it's more about changing things up than anything else. the offense has dried up for a while now, moving folks around as attempt to ignite things a bit seams reasonable.
i'm excited to see that 4th line and hope they get some real minutes tonight.
I hate to admit this, but i think the flames playoff hopes are a pipe dream without their best player and season MVP. It actually will make the final stretch a bit easier on the blood pressure, as win or lose, either result is a positive for the franchise's progression.
