QOTD: Trade Deadline Timing
Last year Burke and others got caught at the deadline and ran out of time.
He chose not to move Cammalleri for scraps (a debate that continues to rage on with the site).
One of the issues was a GM with a top rental waiting until the last minute (Vanek, Islanders), coupled with Kesler in play making everyone else wait.

I don't think GMs intentionally wait until the last minute, but that is probably when the value for any player is the highest. With 30 minutes until the deadline, options become limited and the amount teams are willing to give up for a rental player increases.

Deadline day. Hopefully get a nice bidding war going and take advantage of a desperate team.

I voted for soon........Glencross looks like a player that knows he's moving, he's not really helping the team out at all. Last year with Cammy, due to a host of reasons, it came down to the wire and he was never moved out. I don't want to see that again. If they can get a decent return in the next couple of days, pull the trigger.

Whenever the price seems right, not sure you can control it anymore than that. Yes there is some strategy behind it for sure, but to think there is that much control behind it is probably wishful thinking. You could wait and get the biggest price possible, or wind up with nothing. It's a risk, and you simply have to weigh your options against your best offer at the time. Without knowing what that is, it's an impossible question to answer.
Part of the difficulties of being a GM.

It's a fine line. The Cammy trade fell through because there was too many moving parts and they waited too long to pull the trigger.
That doesn't mean trade him as soon as you can. Treliving should make a deal that's fair and not get greedy trying to wait for something more.

So far it looks like Treliving's methodical thinking keeps things moving at a snails pace. Small bit of concern that the ship will have sailed by the time Treliving gets to the dock. Hence why I voted Soon, needs to be done before D-Day.

Last year was a one-time set of events. People need to get over it. Typically, the price goes up as you approach the deadline - as long as it's a sellers' market. And it appears to be this year.

First answer is a little too easy to pick.

I don't think you need to wait until deadline day for a team to get desperate. If they have a need to fill bad enough and are willing to pay the price you pull the trigger asap.
Bidding wars can back fire just as fast when a team says screw it, I will go with the cheaper option.

I said deadline day only because there doesn't seem to be the dominos to fall this year before Glencross goes.

i wish the answer could be depends.
to me there is value in getting him out of the room sooner, rather than later - why let it be a distraction any longer and if you are getting a guy in eturn, then it provides him with more time to adjust to his new team/role/city etc
it is also possible that other trades help establish the market value - presumably the highest value is on trade deadline day when the buyers really decide to go all in

No, you can hold out and let the buyers sweat it out hoping they'll outbid themselves.
It happens.
I don't think the Flames should play that game. Take a 2nd and a prospect, and if you can't get that, then take the biggest offer on the table the morning of deadline day.
I'm a huge fan of Glencross, but he needs to be moved now, I don't think keeping him around for the rest of the year is a productive option. He's not doing well in this environment any more.
