Scoring Winger

Unfortunately not as lucky as those involved in the Toronto one. Flight between Greece and Cyprus crashes in Southern Greece. No survivors but not known how many passengers as yet. Reports that there were problems with the air conditioning and cabin pressure. Passeneger texted a relative complaining of it being freezing inside. Also 2 Greek fighter planes were scrambled to try and assist reported that the Co-Pilot and possibly the Pilot were slumped over the controls.
Scary stuff, thoughts with all those involved.
Edited to add 121 passengers thought to be on board. Still no survivors expected.

Air conditioning problems? Because it was cold?
I don't think so.
I read that it was a cabin pressure problem, one that was already known of in regards to that specific plane.
Between the pressure drop and the altitude (~30,000ft) the temperature would have just plummeted - after everyone had already passed out...

Reminds me of Payne Stewart and his LearJet. Tragic. Still the pilots should have had time to get the plane down to an acceptable altitude before O2 deprevation set in. The cockpit voice recorders will hopefully shed some light on this.

The bodies were frozen solid
ATHENS (Reuters) - Most of the bodies recovered from the Cypriot plane that crashed into a mountain near Athens with 121 people on board were "frozen solid," a Greek Defense Ministry source said on Monday.
"Autopsy on passengers so far shows the bodies were frozen solid, including some whose skin was charred by flames from the crash," the source, with access to the investigation, told Reuters.
Early indications suggest the 115 passengers and six crew were dead or unconscious when the Helios Airways Boeing 737 plunged to earth on Sunday. There were no survivors.

Bizarre story.

Is that really all that bizzare? Didn't they crash in the mountains?

The "mountains" near Athens aren't particularly freezing in August.
Strange story, hopefully there was no foul play considering the age-old Greco-Turkish tensions in Cyprus, but it just sounds like a technical failure.

more disturbing stuff. airline's offices were raided. Pilot hasn't been found yet.
The Greek air force sent two F-16s fighter jets to intercept the plane. They caught up with the airliner at 10,400 metres and peered inside the cockpit. The jet pilots saw the co-pilot slumped over the controls but could not see the captain, and oxygen masks were dangling inside, government spokesman Theodoros Roussopoulos said.
When the jets flew by a second time they saw two people possibly trying to take control of the plane; it was unclear if they were crew members or passengers. The plane crashed 40 minutes later.

But there was no air conditioning problem.
They might have THOUGHT there was an air conditioning problem, but it was the air temperature at 30,000 feet (~ -80C?) seeping in to the cabin through the leak.
The plane flew twice as far as it was supposed to, it only crashed after running out of fuel. The plane was also flying in a square, making right hand turns every set interval. Supposedly auto-pilot automatically does this if the system (that runs through the pilots) losses radio contact.
Kind of comforting in a way. Planes are so well built that even after all on board are frozen solid the plane will still fly in a circle all on its own for hours until it is out of fuel!!! That is insane...
Soon, when planes completely fly themselves, you could have planes landing with all on board dead from some other random problem! eek!

This is one of the strangest plane crashes I've ever heard of, The pilots were out cold, someone tried to take over the plane, than passangers were frozen solid and than finally burned in the crash, while the plane had flied itself in a square pattern for hours..............wtf?
