Default Shaw to close YYC call center

Looks like a loss of 1000 jobs. That's significant. Anyone know what's going on? Are they moving the call center overseas?

About 1,600 employees in Shaw's customer care operations in Calgary, Edmonton and Kelowna will be offered the choice of:

-- relocating to one of Shaw's expanding contact centres, with the
assistance of a package of $7,500 to help them move,
-- the opportunity to take on new roles in their current location, or
-- a generous severance package well in excess of the statutory
requirements that recognizes their tenure and contributions to the
company.

I totally JUST posted in the Layoffs in the Oilpatch thread.

They are moving the jobs to their other call centres. Employees are given the option of relocating in the same position, transferring to a different position in the same city, or taking a severance package.

Cost to recruit and retain employees in Calgary, Edmonton and Kelowna is just too high.

They have to be able to afford to keep moving the fat cats around in:

2 CL604 Challenger Corporate Jets,
1 EC135 Eurocopter Helicopter.

A company the size of Shaw having an aviation division, shows how wasteful they truly are.

You can track those Challenger registrations and see where they go too, lots of trips down to Phoenix and over to Maui...

really? weird.

So someone could be working in Edmonton and get transferred to Montreal or Victoria? I'd have to contain my excitment if I were them. Winnipeg, not so much.

I noticed one day they painted over the logo on their hanger. I can't see why they would do that except for PR reasons.

You'd be excited to have to transfer across the country for a job that probably pays less than 50k a year?

Hopefully it won't further damage their terrible customer service, again.

Shaw's really been slipping lately. Prices are up, services are down, network upgrades are on permanent hold... good times.

You expect Jim Shaw to pay for his own trips to Maui out of his paltry $5.9 mil a year pension?

The company may be public but the Shaw family is still the majority owner. So they can do what they want. Why would you guys care? Don't buy their stock if that's how you feel.

Because friends and family are directly related to how they operate?
Yeah yeah, they COULD get another job, or these guys could stop being jackasses with their money.

Buy a share and go complain at their AGM, that'd be my advice to any friends or family who are chapped about it.

Are they using their own money or corporate money?

Well they are using corporate money to give themselves insane amounts of their own money. Jim Shaw's total compensation last year was $31 million dollars. It's their right, and their business, but they do have a reputation.
