RadioShack files for bankruptcy
Quote:
RadioShack Corp., the 94-year-old consumer-electronics chain, filed for bankruptcy with a plan to turn about half of its 4,000 stores into Sprint Corp. locations and close the rest.
The company said Thursday that it has an agreement to sell 1,500 to 2,400 of its locations to a unit of Standard General LP, its biggest shareholder. Standard General has a deal with wireless carrier Sprint to set up stores-within-stores at as many as 1,750 locations. The rest will be shuttered under a deal with a liquidator, Hilco Merchant Resources.

I have fond memories as a kid of going to 3 different Radio Shacks (within reasonable (less than an hour) walking distance) and getting free batteries every month with a battery club card.

Circuit City bought their Canadian operations in 2004 and renamed all of their stores to The Source in 2005. Then, Circuit City went bankrupt and The Source got acquired by Bell.
Radio Shack has continued to operate in the US (and I think they had a few stores that weren't part of the Circuit City sale that kept the name in Canada).

Radio Shack has been gone and dead in Canada for a long time. The Source is owned by Bell and will stick around a little while longer but I have started to see them close up.

Talking about The Source, the other day I was looking for a plain jane VGA cable, so I went into the Southcentre one. Asked for a VGA cable, first the guy looked at me blankly and then he clued in and took me to the right shelf. He grabbed a cable and gave it to me, I looked at the price $29.99, I already knew that MemEx had cables for $9.99 I just didn't feel like making the trek, but for $20 I sure will. I walked out of the store, I am not sure how long that business model is going to survive.

The Source has basically become a Bell Mobile store. It's a far cry from the Radio Shack days, but in fairness that's what electronics stores have become.
The people who need stuff that Radio Shack/The Source carry are willing to order online, smart phones has eliminated the need for cameras, video cameras, PDAs, mp3 players, heck even mini-systems.
All that's left are cell phones, TV's (with no margin), Blu-Ray players (no margin), video games and systems (no margin) and computers (laptops/tablets/towers all no margin).
When I worked there (no years ago) the push was on accessories as they had markup, but realistically walk into a Source, look around, look as the signs, and uniforms... it's a cell shop that also carries electronics. Heck even the cubicles are gone.

lol yes! This was the only reason I ever went in that place. At the time I had about 7 different guitar effects pedals going so I was always burning through 9 volt batteries.
