Flames Mark Giordano's Road to the Top

Nice little NHL.com article on Giordano's rise from being an undrafted KHL'er to the big league.

I think it's fair to start a new thread when the captain has an article about him on NHL.com.

We really need to stop jumping on people for starting new threads, it promotes more conversation.

Have you seen the size of that thread?

Also, the Mark Giordano thread was originally posted in September 2008.
It's fun to dig up old threads and laugh at moon but it's probably ok to start a new thread every 5-6 years.

Anyways. They mentioned at the game that Gio's the only undrafted captain in the league. Incredible what he's accomplished.

Flames

When we lost Iginla in 2013 I honestly thought my days as a Flames fan were numbered. Even though I vaguely remember the 80’s and worshipped the 89 team, I was still a little kid. For me, the heyday of the Flames was 2003-2008: what I consider the Iginla era. Yeah I know Kipper and D. Sutter had as much to do with it as Iggy, but he was in his prime, he was an Alberta boy, and I loved cheering him on.

In those days we had great rivalries with the Canucks and Oilers and from what I recall we had pretty good success against them. Iginla seemed to make it a personal mission to play well against our rivals. I remember many nights cheering on one of his many multi-goal games versus one of our hated rivals. His power-forward brand of hockey and regular fights were legendary. The Flames made the playoffs five years in a row – quite a feat in this era of salary caps and parity. The Flames were perennial Stanley Cup contenders and were known as a hard working team that opponents generally did not like playing.

Fast forward to today, and I am back to being just as passionate about the Flames as I was during the Iginla era. Frankly, it is thanks to Giordano. His work ethic and commitment is unrivalled, he is a heart-and-soul player who appears to will himself to be better every game. And you can see how his attitude has permeated the Flames roster this year.

Just like the Iginla era, there is a lot of credit to go around: Hartley and coaching staff have done a great job, the young forwards (Gaudreau and Monahan primarily) have been excellent, and the scouting and player development system has produced good NHL skill up and down the lineup. This season has restored my optimism and the results so early in our rebuild indicate to me that we are back on the road to being perennial cup contenders again. As a hockey fan, what more can you ask for?

When Iginla was traded we saw the end of an era. What we didn’t know at the time was that Giordano was going to be so ready and able to fill that void. I like to think that Giordano got a lot of his leadership skills from playing with Iginla for so long. But he is his own player and we as Flames fans are very lucky to have him lead our team.

People may not realize that they don't have to bump an old thread to bring up the discussion from that thread. It can be as simple as starting a new thread and linking to the old thread for people to check out. I believe the mods even mentioned this a few years ago.

It gets more common the farther back you go.

I posted this article as a new thread for some of the reasons stated above and because time-and-time again many posters whine about how there is never any positive national (eastern) media coverage about the Flames and anyone associated with the organization.

In my opinion, our captain deserves his own thread whenever NHL.com posts an article about him.

Because there was no draft.

Any players who actually went through the draft?

I remember watching a game against the maple leads where he scored 2 great goals and I knew there we had something special there. I was surprised he had to play in the k in order for him to get a one way.
