Rank the Canadian teams
Wouldn't have expected Montreal to be this good, figured they'd drop off this year.
Calgary is obviously surprising, I had them pegged to be just better than the Oilers and in a bottom 5 spot
Winnipeg is also surprising as I figured they'd be a bubble team, but on the outside of the bubble all year.
Didn't predict the Leafs to collapse this badly.
The only teams that are relatively where I thought they were is Vancouver and Edmonton, and I guess Ottawa, but more so, I just didn't think about them, like most don't.
Well, I guess Edmonton is kind of surprising being in 29th.
1. Montreal - 67 pts - 49 gp
2. Winnipeg - 60 pts - 52 gp
3. Calgary - 59 pts - 51 gp
4. Vancouver - 57 pts - 48 gp
5. Ottawa - 49 pts - 48 gp
6. Toronto - 48 pts - 51 gp
7. Edmonton Oilers - No good - gp

Montreal has probably an extra 10 points in the standings than they should have due to Carey Price alone IMO.
Nothing wrong with having a great goalie mind you, and Price is probably the best in the world ATM.

Yeah, I've never been a fan of the whole taking away a teams points due to a good goalie. Probably because we had that shoved in our faces by Oilers and Canucks fans for so many years with Kipper.
You can have a really good number one centre that's responsible for wins, or an amazing number one d-man where your team would be screwed if he went down with an injury, but the second it's a goalie people tend to discredit the team because of it.

Are Montreal that good? Or are they propped up by Price playing lights out goaltending as per?

I never had the Flames figured for a bottom-5 team this year. I expected there would be several teams just writing off the season and hoping for McEichel, and it would be too hard to match that level of suck. But boy howdy, I never thought I was going to be this right.

just based on instinct and heroin
1) Montreal - Decent team with lights out goaltending.
2) Calgary - Right now I have to put them here because A) I'm a homer B) This flames team has more character then the teams below them
3) Vancouver - They're struggling now, but I think they'll be there to the end. But their window is closing
4) Winnipeg - Their goaltending has started to betray them like Vader stabbed teh good and noble emperor in the back
5) Ottawa - Just not a good team.
6) Toronto - That blueline is awful, their forwards play a incredibly selfish game. Kessel is the fastest fat guy in hockey
7) Edmonton - Though I cheer that they embrace no pressure hockey again and give their fans hope only to dash them again next year, I also hope that they do well enough not to get any of the three uber players in the draft. But please sign Lowe and Mac-T to contract extensions.

1) Calgary - Call it a homer pick, but honestly, there's like 4-10 points we "should have" gotten this year where the flames just had "one o those games" (Toronto, Buffalo, Carolina, Florida, come to mind). Plus they play most of their games in the west where the compete level is simply much higher.
2) Montreal - No brainer, Carey Price is the 2MVP in the league after Mark Giordano. He probably has the Hart locked up this year. But I've never had any real respect for the East when it comes to evaluating records.
3) Winnipeg - I wouldn't put too much stock in how we've destroyed them. Hutchinson is a good goaltender and they usually dominate that score adjusted corsi stuff.
4) Vancouver - They can't seem to score goals worth ****. Luckily Ryan Miller and Eddie Lack have been outstanding, but I'm not sure that's going to be enough. To me they're basically the late Iginla/Kipper era Flames minus the fact that we hate them... even if they get into the playoffs it's a first round exit.
5) Ottawa. Meh. I don't really watch them and I don't really care about them.
6) Edmonton. I know they're really LOL-worthy, but I see them at least being competitive with Nurse/Brossoit/Draisatl/(Hanifin/Eichel/McDavid). They have some serious issues they need to iron out make no mistake, but they're a very young team overall..
7) Toronto. I thought we should have beat them when we played them, but the Flames did play their most hilariously bad 2nd of the season and get beat by bad puck luck in the first. They're just so poorly build with terrible contracts. And man, did anyone see that goal Bernier let in a few games ago? That's career-destroyer bad. AND they play in the East.
