Uber, your thoughts ?
Uber is a company with 40 billion valuation and recently facing a strong opposition in Canadian cities. what are your thoughts on it ?
For those who dont know about it
With Uber, there’s no need to call a dispatcher or hail on the street. You can request a ride with the push of a button and track your driver’s progress to your location. Plus, they’ll notify you once your driver arrives so you can wait comfortably indoors.

I hate the taxi commission too, but Uber is kind of a piece of #### company who takes zero responsibility for even the product that they help sell.
The answer needs to be looser restriction on taxi licenses, not an app that lets some person who has absolutely zero passenger transport insurance, or requirements for car maintenance drive around picking people up.

Most of my office booked a taxi in advance for last nights Christmas party and probably less than half, including me, didn't have a taxi show up.

Absolute piss poor service. If this was any other industry these guys would have been outta business years ago for chronic unreliability, terrible service, and shady business practises.

Cab drivers are just as likely to be rapey scumbags as uber drivers if your a drunk woman.
I'd welcome Uber, or anything else that makes paying for a ride just like any other business, any one should be able to buy a car and run it as a cab, all they should need is an enhanced drivers licence and a regular safety check on the vehicle.

Had an idea!

Like the idea, hate the company. Hopefully they change the way they operate because the taxi industry is ripe for disruption.

Uber is an interesting one.
When it comes to Calgary specifically they've done an excellent job positioning themselves as being the "saviour" from tyranny of the current taxi cartel. For that I must tip my hat, just some masterful PR maneuvering on their part.
They've done such an great job of this that it's almost impossible to talk about Calgary's taxi industry without it being a discussion about Uber. It's not "taxis VS car hailing services", it's "taxis VS uber".
But as others have pointed out they are quite the scummy operation, and their management seems to take a "win at all cost" approach to competition. Many times crossing well over the line of what a normal person or business would consider ethical.

Oh nice. A taxi thread the day after I spent 35 minutes on hold from #TAXI.
Absolutely ridiculous how pathetic the taxi system is in this city. I've been whining about this since I was old enough to drink and SFA has changed. WHY? WTF is the reason that only so many licenses are issued?
It is infuriating that in a cold country like Canada, and in an age where most of the population agrees that driving drunk is a very poor decision, that a goddamn taxi is so hard to find on a Friday night.

No kidding. I've been to cities around the world and having public transit that doesnt suck donkey Swass or you can get a cab without any trouble makes a huge difference.
WTF is wrong with here?
Calgary is such a huge city that having cabs is a license to print money so put more of them on the fataing streets!

What do I think? 40 billion dollar valuation for a company that, more or less, has a mobile app and business practices that make Russian oil barons blanch?
I think the stock market is full of idiots, that is what I think.

I am a huge fan of Uber and use it all the time - and toronto has a decent taxi industry. If they came to Calgary it would be an instant hit.
My buddy's last uberX ride was in a tesla. Black car service is great for date nights.

The first post says they have a valuation of 40 billion, so I assumed they were.
I guess my next assumption would be that they've been valued at a potential 40 billion, *if* they went public. Which is still ludicrous. And which I'd better check on The Google.

Their valuation is based off their latest round of financing.

This article indicates that private investors are the ones being rooked into thinking it's worth 40 billion. Most telling is this quote:
"...the people who stand to make the most money are the ones providing the public estimates of its value."
In other words, it's valued that way because everyone agrees they can make a lot of money if it's valued that way. Cozy.
