Dennis wideman
If he can continue this level of offensive output I think it more then makes up for the odd defensive turnovers he gives up. I know it's not likely that he can keep this pace but if he does even close to it could it be possible that his name is in the Norris conversation?

How can a guy win the Norris when he's not even the 2nd best defenseman on his team? Defensively he still has his moments but he's been pretty good at picking his spots and pinching. He's benefitted from chemistry with smart players like Hudler and Gadreau having that sense of knowing when he's pinching. Offensively with Wideman it's just a matter of confidence and playing with skilled forwards that can set him up for the big shot.

Dennis Wideman has 10 goals.

As much as I like wideman, ill admit that if he wins the Norris, then that would surely prove that the norris trophy is no longer about the defence.

I can safely say that a number 3 defenseman has never won, perhaps never even been nominated for the Norris.
Wideman is playing like he was the start of last year prior to his injury. The puck is going in for him and he's been reliable defensively.
We would likely see some defensive gaffs in his game with Smid or Engelland as his linemate. Russell has been very steady in his own zone and knows when to pass it to Wideman and when to hold onto it.
But cheers, Wideman is earning his contract right now which could rarely be said for him in Calgary. He was brought in to score PP goals like he regularly did in Washington.
Not only that, but he seems to be great with the kids just like Hudler. He even took Bennett out golfing after he was drafted.

I think the odds of Wideman being moved to RW are greater than him ever winning a Norris.

I can't say as I'd be opposed to this. It almost makes sense. That way we could bring in a legit #3 defenseman for a few other pieces...

Norris? No, but maybe a "fricken" by his name with his current play lately!

I like Wideman. I love the Flames. But he has no business even being in that discussion. If by some miracle he won it, I would be the first guy in line to speak out about it.

Dennis Wideman is clearly of Norris potential.

Since the question is qualified with him keeping up his production that would mean he reaches the 30 goal milestone. Only 8 defensemen have scored 30 goals, he would be the 9th. The last one to do so, Mike Green, was in a very tight voting race with Chara for the Norris that year and placed higher than much better defenseman like Lidstrom.
He wouldn't produce nearly as many points as Green but given how terrible the voters are anyways if there wasn't a player with significant amount of points more (which would mean Giordano cooled down) I think he could get some votes.

Loving his big goals, and he's showing he should probably stay instead of being dealt, but he's not the best defenseman on this team so how could he get consideration?
Also, since it seems offensive output is very important to you, don't forget, that even though Wideman has 10 goals, he still has 10 less points than Gio.

I can see Wideman winning the Norris if he gets on a hot streak and ends the year with 40 plus goals.

He wont win the Norris - more of a chance of the Richard than the Norris.
However, Wideman has a niche role on this team as a weapon jumping into up for shots. He needs to be sheltered from bad matchups too much to have any consideration for the Norris, especially when 2 of the current top 5 or so defencemen play above him on his own team

Wideman has been awesome since game 3 this season. Well worth the money.
With an offensive minded defenceman, there are occasional defensive errors, but his actual production outweighs them. I'm glad he's healthy and seems to have really found a match with Russell.

Very much my thoughts. Wideman's a bit like Adrian Aucoin, if you can play him a fair bit, give him a steady partner and manage the matchups, you can get a fair bit out of him. If you try to play him as a top pairing guy all the time, he'll fair miserably. In the role he's doing right now, that's exactly how you get the most out of him.
