Figured it was time to start this years version of the thread.

First order of business: Could this be the beginning of the end for College Athletics?

Quote:
For the first time in the history of college sports, athletes are asking to be represented by a labor union, taking formal steps on Tuesday to begin the process of being recognized as employees.
Quote:
CAPA's initial goals do not include a call for schools to pay salaries, Huma said. However, he declined to rule out the possibility that CAPA would seek that type of compensation in the future and said he knows the public will begin speculating about scenarios in which players would receive a cut of the $5.15 billion in revenues currently generated by athletic departments in the five power conferences.

He treats bama like the pro's, its funny because that scumbag couldn't handle the pro so he has to abuse his powers in college. One day his little game will put bama in deep s(&t

He does what I bet a ton of other coaches do. The point is, he didn't walk away from this kid and a bunch of others did.

He gets a ton of bad press, might as well get some good too.

It's a medical scholarship that doesn't count towards his 85 and that is the only reason why he did it.

Yet all the others schools backed away, which he didn't. That's what I'm getting at here. I understand that it doesn't apply to player scholarships, but that didn't stop the other programs from bailing when the kid got hurt.

Alabama had a Diana roster that Torys knee is senior year of high school, Florida was the only one to continue to give him a scholarship until he sign with Alabama signing day. It happens, He's just trying to get good press for all the crap that he does that is wrong

Tragic day for Cal. Backup lineman Ted Agu collapsed during a team conditioning session this morning and has since died in hospital. Tremendous sadness throughout the university/program as he was a truly wonderful person. The reaction on twitter from current and former teammates reflect the type of leader he was on/off the field.

I've taken a post from the Golden Bears forum from a staff member who knew Ted. It describes him quite well...

Quote:
"I was lucky enough to know Ted from our work together on the orientations for frosh athletes that happens right after Spring semester is done. Ted was one of the Peer Athletes -- and he was perfect for the role. Ted was always there to help anyone. His face always had a smile on it and his warmth would fill a room easily.

He was a true student-athlete -- he knew football was not going to be his career and he made sure his gpa was solid. He was a Public Health major -- which appeals to students who like science and also want to help make the world a better place.

The last time I saw him was about eight weeks ago. I was on the bus home going down Bancroft and Ted got on at the RSF. As always he was happy and joyful -- even though he was starting to deal with studying for mcats, which is not a fun undertaking for anyone, never mind someone who also has to commit to football.

This is a horrible thing. A horrible horrible thing -- it's apt that today the campus is dark and being rained on -- there is no joy in this day."
Just an awful, awful day for my favourite college program. RIP Ted.

New College Playoff trophy revealed. Not bad imo, new trophies are usually so awful. Not a huge fan of it being pulled out of the base though, they should have made it one piece.

Great tongue in cheek article from an AP voter and his glee at the new playoff system and how utterly stupid the poll system was.

Quote:
Polls are horribly wonderful and wonderfully horrible. They make for fantastic discussion in a world in which rankings things - from bikini bodies to fantasy football players to craziest modern dictators - takes up about 60 percent of the Internet. They are legitimately needed for historical reference and present-day comparisons.

But they were a terrible way to pick a national champion, or which two teams should meet for the national title.

In the BCS era, polls accounted for two-thirds of the choice. There was the Harris Poll - often uninformed - and the coaches poll - often uninformed and biased. Then there was the AP poll - irrelevant

I'm still an ego-drive blowhard in my daily life, but when it comes to polls, my sanctimonious days are over.

Vote how you want everybody. It doesn't matter. Thank goodness

Polls are for fun. Polls are not something I'll be dedicating myself to for a couple hours every Saturday night or Sunday morning while trying to beat the insane AP deadline of 11 a.m. Sunday, less than 12 hours after many of the best games end.

Well, it's started officially with TAMU and SCar facing off on the SEC network.

A&M is curbstomping SC. Barring a major collapse there goes the first top 10 team of the season.

Funny that Johnny football's replacement walk's in and throws 500 yards against what is supposed to be a top ten team.

Do we even need rankings anymore with a playoff? If nothing else they can eliminate preseason rankings and start them maybe week 7 or 8 when we have a better idea of who is actually good. South Carolina should fall out of the top 25 for this.

The painfully obvious format is an 8 game playoff with the 5 conference champs and 3 wildcards. I don't think they'll get rid of the preseason rankings til then.

Wildcards open up some of the same problems as now (selected or played in?), but 8 teams is ideal, 16 is way too many and 4 not enough.
