Default This forum requires that you wait 10 seconds between searches

Hey,

I was just wondering if this feature is really that useful still. I guess I never really understood it, but since there are a lot of forums that utilize it, it must be handy for something still.

Sometimes it is a minor nuisance though. And chance it can be removed?

10 seconds? That's a nuisance?
I assume it hurts site performance.

Just a minor one as I do use the search feature a lot. Don't take it as a criticism or anything like that. I just noticed that some site do this and others don't and I was wondering if it was important, or perhaps something vestigial.

Some sites don't have any delay because they aren't big enough or have big enough databases to need any kind of delay. Other sites search doesn't have any impact (i.e. their servers are scaled higher or their data is different). Search puts lots of load on our site so it's limited a bit.

Just surprised that's all. Bit of a reflection of how an on demand world is changing our tolerance for any delay

All of these threads are indexed by Google, aren't they? Can the Google search API be integrated to offload the demands of searches off the site? I have seen a few different sites that let you conduct searches with Google rather than something built in.

Of course, you could also just go to Google or Duckduckgo and include " site:forum.calgarypuck.com" in the search string.

You can do that though I've seen varying degrees of success. And you don't have all the options you do with a built in search like selecting a specific forum or searching titles only etc.

The best option is to use a proper search engine like Sphinx or elasticsearch, then the search will work well and use far less resources vs. using the built in database search.

That's the eventual plan since Xenforo can be integrated with elasticsearch.
