My household recently acquired a Sony WEGA TV, apparently HD ready (whatever that means). I've got tier 2 cable as it stands now (I think that's what it is, from ch.2 up to ch.82), no satellite or digital.

Now, I did a search for any and all things HDTV on this board but am still quite unsure about the whole thing. From all I've heard, it's terrific, and definitely worth it.

Seeing as how I am somewhat ######ed and inept when it comes to technology, I was wondering if some of you could help me out here. What do I need to know, you ask? Everything, basically. Who offers the best packages, the best pricing, options etc., and whether I need to purchase some kind of box or dish or whatever. Also, can I still have my normal cable package with the HD channels tacked on, or do I have to go to another, more expensive package?

I'd like to know the paths some of you guys took in getting HD for yourselves.

Thanks a lot.

Call your service provider.

You'll definetely need a High Def Cable box aswell... sold from your service provide. I don't know the current prices but I highly recommend the PVR Recorder box.

Yes, HDTV is fantastic. Found myself watching GOLF today just to see how clear the picture was, could see every blade of grass almost.

I have a 56" RCA Scendium with HDTV, it's amazing. I love watching football games in Hi-Def, it's reall sharp and crisp looking. Movies on HBO are quite nice too. I got my HD Box from my Cable Provider, BrightHouse Networks.

I would check out the packages and prices of Shaw cable or Bell and Star Choice satellite. If you want Center Ice, Bell is the only provider in Alberta. Shaw also doen't carry TSN HD, although they don't carry many HD programs. No HD channels carry 100% HD programming although it is increasing. HD ready means that you need a HD decoder for your TV. A good site for an HDTV education is Digital Home Canada and go to their forums.
