What is the deal with this light bulb?
The light bulb in our bathroom burnt out and I am pretty sure this is the first time it has ever been changed.
It kind of looks like maybe the outside of the bulk is broken or it it is just a bulb I have never seen before.
Can I assume that I can walk into a hardware store and find one of these ?

Can you take it out? Does it have a threaded base like traditional fixtures or one of those GU10's typically used for halogens. I'm not sure about that bulb, but if the base is standard finding a replacement should be simple.

Hard to tell. Is it a two pin push in connection? If it is, it should probably have a marking with the base type on the bulb somewhere, or failing that you can measure the pins center to center in mm and that'll tell you the base type. A G8 base has pins 8mm center to center while a G9 base has pins 9mm apart. There are others too:

I've never seen a fluorescent with that kind of base type though. Usually halogen or LED.

Looks like a common MR-11 bulb will fit in that.

I tried to take it out and cracked the glass on it. I don't think the base is threaded.
I will see if just pulls out.

So looks like it was a 2 pin connector, before I broke it. When I pulled it out, lots of this soot like stuff came out.
Is that normal when these bulbs burn out? I am wondering of a need to replace the fixture.

The soot is probably from the pins burning. That seems like a huge fixture for that bulb, and the housing would indicate an MR type should be there instead. I'd definitely replace with a 35w MR16

If you can get at the ballast that'd be the best way to determine which bulbs will play nicely

When you are handling those bulbs it is also advisable to either wear a glove or cover it with a bag as you're installing it. The oils from your fingers can create hot spots on the bulb itself and cause it to burn out faster.

Looks like a G4 Halogen bulb. You can find those anywhere, like Canadian Tire or Home Depot. I have a few lamps that use those type of bulbs.

Thanks for the help, found one at Lowes. I took the old bulb, and the packages had the pins for display so it was pretty simple to confirm I had the right one.
Stupid machines wouldn't accept my chip card and I guess my magnetic strip is wonky, so will have to go back and grab it today.

So on the topic of bulbs - what are people's thoughts about the longevity of the LED replacements for halogens? I bought a few to replace some burned out 50W halogens in my bathroom and they work amazingly well at only 4.5W, but they're expensive. I don't mind the price if they'll last significantly longer than the halogens, which seem to burn out regularly.
