Icon45 Jonathan Bernier remembers sports superstar Nelson Mandela

...I don't even.

Quote:
Nelson Mandela is Jonathan Bernier’s favourite athlete!

Jonathan Bernier should have spent less time between the pipes and more time hitting the books. Bernier clearly has no idea who Nelson Mandela is as he says he was one of his favourite athletes growing up.

In an unbelievable display of ignorance Bernier attempts to give the best response to a question regarding South African anti-apartheid revolutionary and former President. Let’s just say he does not have all the facts, as his response will undoubtedly leave you with your face planted firmly in your palm.

Bernier said: ” Well obviously he’s been a tremendous athlete, you know obviously what he means to all the sports, you know the world can be changed by the sports is pretty amazing and I think he’s definitely got a lot of respect in every sport and he was definitely one of the athletes I watched growing up as well.”

This may be the most bone-headed interview of the year!

yeesh....that's unfortunate and the optics are really really bad. Hopefully there is an "out of context" component to it...but that doesn't appear to be the case.

Probably saw bits of Invictus and thought Damon was playing Nelson Mandela. Rather unfortunate...

To be fair, if the MLSE/TSN wanted to properly pump up the tribute (a year since he passed away) they manufactured to Mandela yesterday (focused around sport; Lebron coming to Toronto, flying in Magic Johnson as well) and through the Raptors, they should've controlled the message sent to, and from, the other MLSE employees as to what this was all about.

Bernier should know better of course as well to talk about something he didn't 100% know.

I'm willing to bet he mixed up Ali with Mandela.

not exactly MLSEs fault though that Bernier doesn't know who Mandela was.

While I don't have a major issue with people using recreational drugs, I do believe Bernier needs to be tested.

His answers were like answers from a Beauty Pageant, yet even the dumb blondes laugh at him.

Exactly what I thought of when I read his quote - that poor girl that rambled on about maps and the world being a better place if only more children could have maps. (would add link if I knew how)
