Good point on Johnny's deployment on the PP. I hated watching him have to stand there in the slot getting cross checks in the back. Won't last too long physically in that role.

Disagree completely on your analysis of Colborne being the goat.
That was all Gio on missing the net when he pinched. Brodie on the last goal was Tayloresque.
I know it is not a popular opinion and I like them both a lot...but the Flames top pairing cost them 2 goals. One or both of them should be the goats.

I really don't think it's an unpopular opinion at all. Most posters would agree that Gio and Brodie have played far below their expectations the last handful of games.
That being said, Colborne heading towards the bench in the middle of a 2 on 1 was pretty painful to watch. A lot of bad decisions on that goal in general, but Colborne's decision making was probably the worst of the bunch.

Johnny's good, but the team size is starting to rear it's ugly head! No one is sticking up for the little guys. You see this in the game with the Leafs and the Flames are getting banged up by the Pens.

I have to admit the return to the lineup of three established players seems to have nuked the flow of all four lines.

This. Exactly this. Raymond and Colborne especially seem way out of whack. I wish they had spent some time on a conditioning stint in Adirondack to get back up to speed. Stajan, for all his veteran leadership, does not have the wheels to be a good energy-line forward.
We need to stop the rot, which could be tough against the Hawks.

Calling Mr. Bollig.... to bad he barely does ####. Had to be scratched then he fought, then all he did last night was chirp and take a stupid tripping penalty

I agree on the pair not having a great night, but disagree on the Colborne play completely.
The Flames activate their defense, its a huge part of their goal scoring this year. To do that though you have to make reads as a winger and provide support.
When Gio went in Colborne went back ... so far so good.
But then he just drifts over to his off wing towards the bench to pursue the puck carrier completely dropping his assignment.
Boom 2 on 1.
Colborne was the goat on that play for sure.

Starting to see why Mason Raymond was unable to get a contract as a UFA the fall of 2013.
6 game scoreless streak. the Flames are 5-7-1 with him in the line-up.
He has been moved to Baertschi's #12 forward spot except he has Stajan as the centre.
where does he fit in? He is not going to make any line better.... He is a purely complementary player that can look good when playing with great line-mates.
why a 3 year panic contract?

While I think the Raymond contract panic is a little over the top (salary floor dictates someone had to be signed), I do think the Flames are learning quickly how much foot speed and dogidness had to do with the team's recent success, and its slipping.
Will the vets pick up this style or do they need to make changes?

His stupid tripping penalty was him going after the guy who smoked Smid. You can't have it both ways.

Raymond was vet at Vancouver ... basically 3rd line. You don't think that coach AV would have given Raymond the message that his lack of dogidness was career limiting?
After a player has 13M in career earnings, as has Raymond... it would be very hard to get him to change his game.
Byron definitely changed his game playing a couple of season in the AHL making less than 150k /year. Right after the Reghr trade Byron was playing a Raymond Mason type of game.... he is not close to the player he was 3 years ago.

Not to mention it was a terrible call and seemed like a bit of dive by Despres who came up holding his head. I think if the game wasn't close you would have seen more of a reaction.

I thought Brodie really let the Pens get to him last night. He looked frustrated and took a couple of uncharacteristic penalties. He's had a bit of a tough road trip. Hopefully he bounces back. Flames D needs him.

Yea and all he did was take a tripping penalty.. which is my point. At least take a crosschecking penalty or roughing if you're gonna take 2.
