in addition to the homeless being warm, hearing the sounds of children's laughter etc, I have decided that I would like to change my look up, so I have asked my family for money to get my hair highlighted, my back waxed and a grille for my mouth......
So what is on your personal list? Let's stay away from the charitable stuff...what do CP'rs want?
I was thinking I would like a leaf blower, and a gift certificate to cyclepath as I am currently planning on buying a commuter bike in the spring. Other than that I was thinking of a bike case for travelling on a plane, as I am hoping to go to Moab next fall - but renting one of these cases is like the best route

A job. I've been out of work and looking for 8 months, I just want a good job where the company isn't going through a merger, expansion or about to go under so that in 18 months, I'm stuck looking for one again. A cure for anxiety would be awesome as well.
Realistically, a remote starter, a Trinec (Czech League) "Klesla" jersey and a decent FM transmitter so I can play the music off my phone would be swell.

I do not do the gift thing anymore these days, and won't make it home to see my family. I think I am going to volunteer my time for the holidays. Does anyone know of any good places in Vancouver that require volunteers? I have never actually done any organised volunteering before.

There are a few things on my list, but really, my "Things" list focus around cologne. I've got a good little collection going but want to add 3 or 4 more.
Top of the list....the original Dolce and Gabanna, followed by Trussardi, and Bleu from Chanel.
Gifts that aren't "Things" include a 'Movie night, complete with snacks!' with my niece, and a flight home to spend the weekend with the family.
Good chance that I'll get it all, which would make me a happy, happy man.

This is a solid idea. And frankly, as a new Vancouver transplant looking for a place to volunteer, keep me posted.

Maybe you should ask for a pair of balls, so you can start commuting in the winter!
I'm just kidding....sort of.

Maybe try Union Gospel Mission to see if they need help with their big turkey dinner day.

The CIAO:Van spends Christmas Eve handing out stockings and having a little Christmas celebration for the less fortunate and usually need volunteers: http://www.ciaovan.ca/#!about_us/csgz
You could also probably cold call any Vancouver (or area) shelter and ask if they need assistance: http://vancouver.ca/people-programs/...-shelters.aspx Many will not or do not have the means to advertise for help but may need it.
Prior to calling any of these places, it might be wise to head down to your local police station and get a Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening (http://vancouver.ca/police/organizat...ing/index.html) which might be required for some places to volunteer. If you have no criminal record, it will come back with nothing and you will get clearance for a couple of years. I've had to get one or show proof of one for any volunteer work I've done, so it might be necessary in BC too. Don't let this scare you off from volunteering though, when I've filled it out, it was one quick sheet, show my ID, wait a week to get the paperwork back and done. Very little hassle and the people at the station are usually really helpful when you say it's to volunteer.
I find I haven't really gotten a material Xmas gift I was really excited about in years. Probably since I was a kid.
I'm at the point in my life where the stuff I really need or want tends to be either work-related, highly specialized or expensive (or a combo of all). I don't need or want any useless trinkets, more sweaters or random chinese-made junk. But since it's not realistic to ask for a $2k camera lens, or a specific vintage watch, or a trip to a racing-school, I try to ask for experiences instead....a nice meal, a hockey game, or a quick day/weekend trip. I'd honestly prefer to just have a nice dinner with family, watch my daughter enjoy her presents, and that's more than enough.
But in general, I've found that the material goods in my life that made me the most happy where self-bought. My watch, my car, my camera gear, my trip to the Galapagos...thanks me!
