Icon37 Alfredsson to announce retirement Dec 4 7:30AM MT

update: retirement on Dec 4

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
1) Little more on Daniel Alfredsson: hearing he would like retirement announcement to happen as soon as Monday when Senators are in DET...

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
2) But there is possibility of a larger send-off in Ottawa. After all, it is fitting that's where on-ice portion of his career ends. (END)

Thats a shame.

Alfredsson has always been a polarizing character for me, no matter what I just really didnt like him and could never really figure out why, but I just didnt.

Either way though he was a really talented player and it always sucks seeing a guy hang them up because of injuries.

Too bad that he retired as a Red Wing and turned himself into such a polarizing figure for Sens fans for 3/4 of a season with a washed out post Lidstrom Wings team. Should really be their franchises first cornerstone legend, hopefully last season is quickly forgotten and Ottawa's organization gives him a good send off.

As a non-Senators fan I barely remember him playing in Detroit already.

Hate to see a career ended because of injuries like this. The guy is clearly still capable of playing at the NHL level.

Anyone think he's a Hall of Famer? I think he might be close, probably not first ballot but he will probably get in eventually.

Yeeeeaaaaahhhh…he's also 41. Inuries or not, it's nearly impossible to play into your 40s these days. The game is too fast and too physical.

I'm surprised it took him this long to announce it.

Not a chance. But if he gets in, Iginla gets in 200%.

The HHOF debate is interesting. With Neely and Bure now in, one would have to think that Lindros gets in eventually, and maybe Paul Kariya as well.

Fedorov is a shoe-in, and I think Mogilny gets in to.

Alfredsson should not get in, IMO.

I think Alfredsson gets in simply because he's the only franchise player Ottawa has ever had. That'll probably be enough to tip the balance in his favor

Erik Karlsson isn't a franchise player?

As for Alfredsson, for whatever reason I never really saw him as a legitimate superstar. I feel like in his prime he was the best Ottawa had and was slightly overrated because of it. He's a better version of Ryan Smyth, but a very poor man's Jarome Iginla... (In terms of superstardom, not playing style)...

Yes, I think Alfredsson definitely gets in the for the reasons Hemi-Cuda stated. He won gold/silver medals at the Olympics, and a slew of other medals internationally. If he was a Canadian player playing for a lesser franchise it may have gone the other way, but as is I don't see how he doesn't get in the HHoF.

I hope a couple years down the road we can sign Iggy to a one day contract so he can retire as a Flame.

He's 51st all time in points. I'd say he's got a good chance of HOF based on that alone.
