Icon48 NHL COO says jersey sponsorship is "coming and happening"

prepare for cluttered jerseys covered in ads

Quote:
Collins said that jersey sponsorship is both “coming and happening,” and noted that jersey branding by manufacturers is already a form of jersey sponsorship. He also noted that the league is continuing to test digital replacement technology for board advertisements, as written about in this week’s SportsBusiness Journal.
also some stuff on the world cup, olympics and outdoor games

List of people this is a shock to:

Hilarious to diminish your brand for a few million a year ... maybe.

I know it won't happen but if they chose to go that route, I hope that not a single jersey gets sold.

Is Skoda on board?

I really hate the ads on the jersey thing. It looks stupid and somehow cheap.

IMO ads on jerseys kind of cheapen the brand but I'm not shocked as it's more money for the league and NHLPA and it appears there is no amount of money that is enough for the rich and wealthy.

Edmonton has been doing this already. The Oilers logo has been advertising major suckitude for the last 20 years.

There's simply too much money on the table for the NHL to not eventually go this route.

Yes, it's going to suck, but there's a big difference between soccer/football style:

And this mess:

I'm not saying the soccer one is good, but it's at least a unified design. Hopefully the NHL keeps it that tasteful.

Go Pepsi!

I really regret never getting around to buying the classic 3rd jersey. Wish I would have bought a few to horde them.

What do you mean, "kind of". The money grubbers have no shame.

I would be awesome for the immensely wealthy Flames ownership to stand up and not let their brand be diminished by this.

But they won't, because they've always been about squeezing a buck, because all rich people are. There's never enough money to satisfy greed.
