Flames and Oilers heading in opposite directions
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/f...te-directions/
Quote:
EDMONTON — The dichotomy is stark. Like the two towns, white collar Calgary and blue collar Edmonton. Except in hockey it is backwards.
The Calgary Flames lineup, on paper, looks like a quick and easy two points. Filled with a bunch of who’s-its and what’s-his-names drafted in later rounds — or in the case of their captain, not at all. And Edmonton, the World Juniors gang. A bunch of bonus babies all drafted in Round 1.
Edmonton is five years into a rebuild (and that’s being generous) and couldn’t spell W-I-N if you gave them the W and the I.
|
It's so much more enjoyable to watch the Flames rebuild go so smoothly when at the same time you can watch the tire fire up north for a direct comparison

I feel like we're taking things for granted too soon. This isn't guaranteed to be linear ... or successful.

Current Stanley Cup Odds for Canadian teams...
Habs 14/1
Canucks 20/1
Flames 40/1
Jets 50/1
Sens 50/1
Leafs 50/1
Oilers 200/1
One of these teams is clearly not like the others...

great article apart from being way too generous with the lengths of both rebuilds - it's been about one and a half years for Calgary now I'd say, not 20 games ... and for Edmonton it's certainly not been only 5 years.

Not a shot to the OP at all but I consider this more status quo than news.

It's not a good thing when one team is heading the wrong way, when they were already at the bottom.

And he still couldn't get the details right. Spector is no good.

You're correct in terms of wins, but the big change in culture throughout the Flames organization is the true success here and the reason our rebuild is already so successful. The team will have ups and downs, but because we have management in place that knows how to draft players, how to develop them properly, how to transition them to an NHL game, and then hold them accountable once they're here shows that this franchise has a real direction and purpose
Despite all the complaints from fans about the "treatment" of Sven Baertschi, he's the perfect example of why the Flames are having so much success right now. You don't get a spot in the lineup gifted to you just because you're a talented prospect, if that's all a player wants they just have to take a 3 hour drive north

I want to hear Lowe and co.'s response to someone asking them what year of the rebuild they're in.
I wonder how they'd handle that question? Would they get mad or would they just lie and say that this is all part of their plan?

No way the Habs are anywhere near a cup this year. Eastern conference is like a junior league this season outside of the Pens. Even the Bruins have taken a step back having lost a couple key pieces to trade or injury. Montreal's record is way inflated from playing its majority of games against easy eastern opponents. We've seen first hand how no good they actually are.

I think at this point he just nods in the direction of a security guy in the corner who hands the reporter a note saying to meet management in the basement of Rexall later that evening.

Josh Cooper from Puck Daddy also posted a Flames story today.
Calgary Flames fire towards success in spite of questions
The Flames have gone beyond “a hot start” this season, and Calgary Herald columnist George Johnson is calling out the doubters:
“Outside the city limits, they continue to be regarded as some form of hallucination. A trick of the light, perhaps. A mirage, more likely. Rub your eyes hard enough, long enough, and the verdant oasis will be exposed as barren wasteland.
Oh, don’t worry George, we’re taking notice, hence this story on why Calgary’s success isn’t something to take lightly. Especially Tuesday night’s 4-3 shootout win over Anaheim, which moved them to 12-6-2, and surely added a few more believers.
We have a few reasons why we see it as so – that Calgary is a contender this year.
Three thoughts:
1. The guy in goal
2. The guy on the blueline
3. The kids are all right
