Gaudreau here to stay
per Francis, Flames management has told Johnny to get permanent residence in Calgary
Gaudreau is moving out of his hotel room and moving in with Kris Russell
update:
http://flames.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=739188
Quote:
Johnny Gaudreau will need to cultivate himself a new address. After spending the first six weeks of the season in a downtown hotel, the 21-year-old has been advised by Flames general manager Brad Treliving to find a more permanent place to stay.
“I’m pretty excited I’m getting a chance to move here and get out of the hotel a little bit and start living here,” said Gaudreau, who sits fourth on the Flames with 12 points. “It’s good to get out of the hotel and get a place and just have a more homey atmosphere now.”
He’s got plenty of candidates for roommates.
“I have a few options,” Gaudreau said. “I just don’t want to live by myself. I want to live with a teammate and I think it’ll make it a bit easier for me in my first season here. There’s a few options for me here. I’m just trying to figure it all out right now.”
The 5-foot-9, 160-pound forward could end up with Russell. There’s a chance he ends up bunking with Sean Monahan and Lance Bouma, too.
Russell isn’t sure if he’ll end up with a new roommate, but is happy to see Gaudreau earn a permanent stay with the Flames.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen,” he said. “I think he was just told. The decision is to be made. I’m happy for him and I’m glad he’s got that opportunity to stay for the year.
“The first few games I thought he was really good and there’s a few feeling out periods. I remember my first year there was a lot more that I went through then he’s going through. He’s done a really good job. The few games he’s had to realize how he has to play with his size but I think he’s got his game going.
“He’s got great speed, great vision. He’s definitely an asset on our team.”

Delighted. Been pretty obvious for a while, but always nice to see the management confirm it.

Maybe it's just me, but is that really important to let the world that he was in a hotel, now he's in a downtown apartment, and we know who he's living with? Maybe I'm just a cranky fart, but all that's required to be told is that he's staying with the team. The other information really isn't anyone's business.

You figure the team could buy a few downtown condos specifically for players in these types of situations. Call ups, rookies, recently traded players. Maybe they do but I find it weird he was staying in a hotel. To what really matters though I'm glad he's here to stay and is having a strong season so far.

Would that be considered compensation and therefore be prohibited under the CBA?

I like it. I enjoy following this team and its players, so any extra information about our young star players is great to me.

Why? They are out of town half the time and it's not like it's the Econolodge. They're obviously in an executive weekly or monthly kind of place.

I don't really care where he was/is going to live but it seems like an odd thing to care about that they are releasing that info.

IMO the reason this was included was to show the general public how important our "veterans"/"team leaders" are and the fact that they are really stepping up when it comes to younger players joining the team.
Hudler did this last year with Monahan. The idea the people we have in place on the leadership team are willing to go out of their way and open their homes to younger inexperienced NHLers in my mind is awesome. All while teaching them how to prepare day in and day out is fantastic.
I for one enjoy these updates, as all this does is confirm my beliefs that we have a great culture in the organization and in the dressing room.
Bring on more internal information!
also bring on more Arena/Stadium details Muta

actually just skimming through the CBA again it does look like teams are allowed to provide a condo for only 28 days.
after the 28 days the player has to move out.
I don't know the financials, but it is possible that it is just cheaper to put players in hotels than maintain condo(s) for just players in transition. and would it make sense to have that condo when in all practicality it will be mostly empty for a good chunk of the year

I would assume the Flames own a few units in Arriva for these exact situations
