Gelinas "It's going to be a struggle this year"
Take it for what it's worth but a buddy of mine works at a car rental place and rented a car to Gelinas. He asked him how things were going for the upcoming season and Genlias replied with "It's going to be a struggle this year, we have a lot of young guys with little experience."
How much success can a team have when the assistant coach has that kind of frame of mind? I'm sure he isn't saying that to his players, but if we're hoping the team surprises people, and the coaching staff are part of those people, it makes it tough.

He speaks the truth. I am sure the coaching staff will provide encouragement and praise, but ultimately the best they can do is provide the young guys with opportunity. It will be tough, and they should know it. (And so should the fans!)

So... you'd prefer it if he lied to your friend?
Or was dumb enough to think otherwise?
Yeah, we're going to suck balls this year. Get used to it.

It's an accurate statement, one that wouldn't be discouraging to the players if / when the coaches say it to them directly. The players aren't dumb either, they know how little experience they have going in and that in order to succeed, it will indeed be a struggle and hard work.
It be a lot worse if he was telling the players he thinks they have a playoff team assembled, it would confuse them, and hurt them if they did struggle. Blind optimis and blowing smoke is not a good thing to have. Saying things will be hard is actually not a negative mindset.

Temper you expectations. We're going to get slammed by everyone as a crap team. I'm focusing on youth development this year. Most of the best teams in the NHL went through this too. Consider it the "workout before we get buff" season.

I'm actually excited to see the mindset of the org going with young guys... I'm sure there will be lots of mistakes, but I had enough of the past few years of country club / fewer mistakes.... bring in the new blood!

Hey it hasn't worked for the last 4 years when the Flames were spending to or over the cap and had a line-up that should have been in the playoffs each and every year. This year is setting up as the underdog role and having to work harder to not be embarrassed. In 2004 the Flames beat Vancouver, Detroit and San Jose who had far superior line-ups and experience.

I don't see much wrong with what he said. It is going to be tough, especially for the coaching staff, working with so many young guys on the team.
He didn't say the team sucks, he didn't say the team was full of bums. If he made those comments it would be a bit of a concern. Likewise if he said it was going to be great and a breeze then you would worry about whether the coaches had the right preparation or set up going into the season.

I really think part of the issue with the "Young Guns" campaign was that they had built these player up. Everything seemed to say to me that they were expecting energy alone to win them games.
Now it's a bit more of a realistic approach. I don't mind it.

Sounds like the man spoke the truth and we as fans all know that this season is going to be rough so theres no point for any one in the organization to sugar coat it. This is a year for the kids to get some NHL experience and develop there game so no one should be surprised when were drafting top 5.

His words would only be a surprise to some of the hopeless romantics on Calgarypuck and certainly not to any of the players, his fellow coaches, the GM or the owners.
Gelinas did learn, however, that Calgarypuck spies are everywhere so its probably the last time he says anything other than, "Hell, we're gonna kick ass!!!" to anyone he doesn't know.

I'd rather the coaching staff be straight up honest about the upcoming struggles (which EVERYONE knows will happen), then try and sugar coat it with false predictions and say ''well we might be able to sneak into 8th and who knows what might happen...like the last 5 years have been.

This is like media d-bags that complain about athletes using typical canned answers and cliches, but then roast anyone who actually speaks their mind.

Some fans still need to tone things down, with expectations regarding "Chara-like" Kanzig and "Lucic-like" Ferland. The prospect polls are amazing these days.

I think this team will surprise a lot of people at the end of the season. Are they going to make the playoffs? Probably not.
