Is Grapes trying to get himself canned?
Quote:
Six times during his five-minute show on Hockey Night in Canada, Coach’s Corner star Don Cherry griped about the lack of time for his segment, often with a pronounced scowl on his face. He even threw his arms up in frustration at one point.
One sports TV insider suggested that it was almost like Grapes wanted to get himself fired.
Since Rogers Sportsnet secured the rights to Hockey Night in Canada, Cherry’s segment has been cut from seven minutes to five, something Cherry was never happy about, which was obvious during his show on Saturday night. It’s likely any other broadcaster griping the way Cherry did would have been sanctioned or disciplined in some way

“I’ll tell you the story there, I don’t have much time as usual folks,” an impatient Cherry said, before finishing the anecdote with: “It broke the tension, (Darryl) Sittler scored and we win. Are we over yet?”
Seconds later, while praising Calgary Flames defenceman Mark Giordano, Cherry gnarled: “Now we got Lance Bouma coming up eh, got to hurry folks” ... before finishing with, ‘Now watch he gets a goal, I got to talk fast boys. You got to pay attention to me okay, because I don’t get much time.”After heaping praise on another Canadian player, Winnipeg Jets’ forward Evander Kane, Cherry growled to side-kick Ron MacLean: “Alright, let’s go.” MacLean continued with: “Because we’re tight Don, East Gwillimbury midgets are raising money to go overseas, they’re going to tour Germany and the Netherlands ...
“Why are we tight?! Why are we tight?!” an angry Cherry interjected.
To which MacLean replied: “It’s just you’re so popular, it’s all the advertising.”
I really don't understand why Cherry doesn't make his own 30 minute segment. I think it would be very popular. Don't always agree with him but I love to listen to him. He's right, he doesn't get enough time on air.

What's he being paid, a million bucks for like a few hours of work in the regular season and a bit more in the playoffs? Heck for that money why bother complaining?
And yes I realize he does more than just the on intermission segment, but at lest his on-air time has been significantly cut this year. They don't even bother going to him after the game, so he can just go home at 8:30 EST.
I wonder if they would be better served doing a 15 minute Coach's Corner that's put online for full viewing and pulling a 5 minute segment out of that for the live broadcast. I don't usually watch the intermissions but I rewatched last nights to because of the Gio mention and I felt there was no continuity in the segment.
Sittler, Gio, bouma, kane, charities, there was never any solid points made about any of those things, including the charity. I think the increase in time would allow him to at least make a point about a topic and still remark about the things he wants to talk about while giving the network 5 solid minutes they could air instead of 5 minutes of rambling.

I do agree with him. Just give him the whole intermission... split it into two segments. I'm confident the world would survive an intermission with no insights from Damien Cox and crew.

He has always spoken what is on his mind....likely his way of letting folks know his screen time was cut.....I wonder if they could give him time after the first game?

I don't think Don is trying to get fired, he's just speaking his mind which unfortunately is not usually a good thing these days.
I don't blame him for being mad either. I'd be upset too if I were him.
He's at the stage of his career where he probably doesn't care if he gets fired as he's probably looking at this as the writing on the wall anyway. I don't really watch his segment anymore as it got way too Leafscentric for me but he does have his fans across the country that maybe aren't happy with him getting marginalized by Rogers who probably want to eventually move away from him and MacLean. Who knows maybe TSN would hire him to do a weekly segment?
Always thought him getting a post game show with less restrictions would be awesome. If the Flames for example win I'm usually wanting to talk about right after but there's usually nothing. Why I end up here.
