Edmonton hipper than Calgary?
The Condo King thinks so....
Quote:
“Our product is really for younger people,” he said, explaining that part of the development process includes visiting the city’s bars and restaurants to get a feel for the people. “This city’s way hipper than Calgary.”

The condo king is trying to sell Condo's in Edmonton. What better way to butter people up into buying your building to tell them that Calgary isn't good enough form them.

LOL,
The Edmonton sun would print this.
And A guy actively trying to sell "downtown" condos in Edmonton would say this. (if he believes it or not)
Bashing Edmonton aside, I'm not that much of a bar person myself. But I would guess just based on Demographics and Jobs if you are looking for a bar you can wear Carhartt to Edmonton is probably better, and if you are looking for a bar you can wear a tie to Calgary is probably better. Night life doesn't go to places that are "hipper" it goes to places where people are willing to spend money.

Isn't this the same developer who decided to build his luxury condo tower right beside the bottle depot on 10th?

I'm up there regularly, I find it to be pretty "hip", but of course that's if you're on Jasper/Whyte/82nd/124th . . . Downtown is slowly starting to come around though. Definitely a better arts scene up there.

Complete non-story. Brad Lamb is a 'style-over substance' huckster who's playing up to the Edmonton crowd to sell condos. His marketing materials in the past have included 'Return on Investment' calculations that would put mutual fund salesmen in handcuffs if he were in that industry. That quote is nothing more than salesmanship to get free advertising publicity in the form of a newspaper article.

LYLE: The name's Lanley, Lyle Lanley. And I come before you good people tonight with an idea. Probably the greatest—Aw, it's not for you. It's more a Shelbyville Calgary idea.
EDMONTON: Now, wait just a minute. We're twice as smart as the people of Shelbyville Calgary. Just tell us your idea and we'll vote for it.

I generally tend to disregard the opinions of people that say things like "way hipper".

Dude is such a greasy salesman. He's great at building sales centres for his condos to get deposits from buyers, not so great at building the actual condos.
How long ago did he start selling 6th and 10th? It's been years now. Poor suckers that believed his empty promises will be waiting 5+ years to finally move into their condo. I've seen hospitals built quicker than Lamb builds condos

Obviously he's pandering to potential clients in Edmonton.
As someone who lives in Edmonton, the downtown here is pretty far behind Calgary's, but is starting to develop very quickly. It should be extremely lively in about 5 years.

Much better city to be a student in and a much better arts scene. Calgary is better if you're a working adult.

Aside from Brad Lamb's ridiculous assertions - I think Calgary used to have a cultural deficit in comparison to Edmonton. But, in the past ten years, I think Calgary has easily caught up and surpassed Edmonton. Really interesting festivals like Sled Island and Beakerhead as well as events like Comic Expo have made Calgary a more interesting events city. While Edmonton clings to - "but we have Fringe!" like they do with the 80s Oilers.
I also think we've urbanized a quicker rate and have a better variety of urban neighbourhoods around our core compared to Edmonton - giving us a better street life. Edmonton has Whyte...and that's about it, while Calgary has Kensington, Inglewood, Mission, 17th Ave, etc. Also compare downtown streets like Stephen Ave vs Jasper Ave (which, like Edmonton, is no good).

That might be fair. I'm comparing being a UofC undergrad (2001-2005) to UofA Law Student (2005-2008).
I haven't really been back since 2008 except for the occasional concert so it's entirely possible it's not as nice as I remembered.
