Flames 89 rundown

On sportsnet 1 hd they just finished showing game 6 of the 89 SCF right now. I had forgot how Montreal had taken to running Vernon everytime they where deep. The Rick Green goal to make it 3-2 was criminal, Claude Lemieux should have done hard time for the slew-footing AND straight arm he gave Vernon.

Thoughts on today's refereeing compared to back then and which you prefer.

Thank God we won!

I have no big issues with how the game was officiated, except for the Rick Green goal. There was a lot of clutch and grab.. and the calls were fairly even.

Lemieux went off the rails in the third. The slew foot then running Vernon and taking a 10 minute misconduct. Poor Al Macinnis taking the even up call and missed the bench celebration by sitting in the box for the last minute and a bit. At least he had Pepper in his gonch to celebrate with.

I remember going crazy after the 3-2 goal. Possibly one of the most blatant goalie interference plays ever. There's a reason why Denis Morel was run out of the league a few seasons after. This is one of them.

Much prefer the way today's game is called. Allows for more skill to be demonstrated and rids the league of many marginal players.

I seem to recall the refs putting the whistles away in the past few cup finals. It was a bit different back then, but the refs still do it today. The intensity is notched up and they can't call every little hook slash or whatever or it would ruin the game.

I miss the battles when parking infront of the net. Some of the battles we used to see back then were just plain epic. On the other hand I'm so glad the muggings that would go on in the neutral zone are a thing of the past.
