QOTD: Have young players forced the Flames hand?
The Flames got hammered with injuries on their most recent homestand, and with that players get called up.
Sadly Ferland had a look, got hurt and hasn't played since. Lets take him out of the conversation for now.
The latest to come up, Baertschi improved last night, but he'd be the first guy back to the farm with a healthy body.
However, Jooris and Granlund have both proven to be solid additions to the Flames and may not deserve to be sent down when the Flames get healthy.
My gut says Raymond and Colborne come back first. But when Stajan and Backlund come back do Jooris and Granlund go back or do the Flames start to make room for guys that may have earned their stay?

My gut says the kids go back, and the team stays the course with vets until closer to the trade deadline. Based on Treliving's remarks to date, he has no problem with the youth continuing to play in the AHL.

I would think if Granlund and Jooris keep it up, Hartley should approach a veteran, or two, and ask them if they would like to be part of a team contending now. If the answer is yes, Hartley looks to make a move or two - likely for a prospect (who can play in the AHL now) and a pick.
If Glencross is looking for that big pay day after this year, and a team is willing to go to the table with him now to negotiate an extension with him, it may be in the best interests of the Flames (and Glencross himself) to facilitate a move.
There's many contending teams that could use a player of his grit and skill. Pittsburgh, for one thing. Boston could as well.

You mean Treliving of course. Hartley has a say, but this isn't his call.

Tough one, but I went with Seto getting sent down with Granlund and Jooris staying up. Would be great to find a way for Granlund to stay up too though.

What a wonderful problem to have.
Anyone else remember when it was; "Eric Nystrom and a bunch of scrubs?"

Wouldn't surprise me if something happens with McGratten when people start coming back so Jooris can stay.
Baertschi will go down first. Probably Granlund or Ferland next.
Can't see Jooris going back down. He's made too big of an impact.

The early results suggest that Granlund and Jooris are ready. We shouldn't hold them back.

Setoguchi is getting his chance to show he still has it. I don't think he's showing much and should be the first to go down. He hasn't been terrible just not great either while Jooris and Granlund are outplaying him.

Setoguchi could go down AND the team could make a move to lose a veteran forward. Need both options.

I don't really like any of the choices. I think it's a combination of the first three choices. I don't think Jooris or Granlund will be sent back down, and Setoguchi will be sent down as well as Sven if they don't start producing soon.
Colborne will probably be back within the week, at which point, Ferland will go on the IR (he could be placed on the IR right now without missing any more games).
The other three guys on the IR seem to be still quite a ways from being healthy. The odds are that by the time they start to return, others will have joined them on the injured list.
If miracles happen, and the Flames do get a fully-healthy roster at some point, I think Sven, Setoguchi, and even McGrattan might find their ways to Adirondack ahead of Jooris and Granlund.

The problem is everyone else in the NHL know the problem the Flames have (albeit a good one). If everyone knows you are painted into a corner they aren't going to offer you decent value to take someone off your team. There either has to be a market for the vet (which is why I thing the Flames are desperately trying to get Setoguchi going) or a team has to have the need. This far into the season none of those have happened so until the market is there it is easier to move the waiver exempt players up and down.
Although one could argue no one would take Setoguchi if he was made available.
It is still about asset management.

His price is still really good, and there's not a few teams who'd want an experienced guy who they can trust more than a green call-up.
F'rinstance - can you say he wouldn't make the Oilers' roster?

On the trade bubble - for whatever they return, or down to the farm - Diaz, Setoguchi and Bollig. Baertschi likley down to the farm again. If Jooris and Grandlund keep playing the way they are - would hope Treliving finds a way to let them stick.

Beginning of the year I thought Bollig was an improvement over Gratts for the 4th line. Not so sure now. Bollig has been really bad, and a liability. Plus he doesn't scare like Ern.
Put Gratts on a line with Byron and Sven - see if they play a few inches taller

Wow pretty even across the board on the poll. My gut says they're going to try and trade Glencross as soon as possible (if they can get a decent return).

My personal view is the Flames would trade a vet forward to make room for Jooris/Granlund but the reality is in order for the Flames to make a push for the playoffs, they're going to rely on the depth they have right now.
This is why I voted that all kids will get sent down once to vets are healthy. I don't see any reason right now why the Flames would sacrifice the depth that has given them the success they have had early into this season.
I do feel Glencross should be traded, Stajan to a lesser extent as well. You cannot trade Setoguchi I think, only because there really is no other team that would take him on.

I voted the wrong option. They'll make room for Jooris for sure. Granlund needs another couple of games to cement his spot on the roster. The foundation has been laid, the cement is just drying.
Moves will be made. The only way I see Jooris and Granlund going back down is because Treliving wants time to create the roster space while giving all parties the appropriate ice time they need. That includes Jooris and Granlund as well as the veterans with whom they would be battling for roster spots. If Treliving has these guys on the roster and seeks to trade a veteran he may not get the best deal. He is preaching patience and if Jooris and Granlund get sent down knowing they'll be back up for good in short time then they'll accept that.

Slightly off topic.
How many rookies have we had that scored a goal in their first NHL game.
Jooris and Gaudreau recently. Seems like we got a few IIRC.
