Flames sellout streak quietly ends last night
I can't find attendance on NHL.com's boxscore, but the Calgary Sun has yesterday's attendance at 19095, after every game being 19289 since the playoff run in '04.
Obviously, it unofficially ended a long time ago, but this would be news if the Flames quietly followed in Vancouver's footsteps and decided to stop announcing sellouts.
Anyone know if that announced attendance is real or a misprint? I'm currently trying to find it elsewhere. I just don't see how after posting 19289 for years, the Sun would all of sudden post 19095 as a typo.

Also, the media is usually aware of, and makes a big deal out of these long sellout streaks stopping. So that's the other thing leading me to believe it may have just been a typo.

Wow, so yeah, that's it. That was a long run, and hopefully in a couple of years and some great development we get back to that 06-09 demand.
Randy Sportak, if you're reading, want to make an article on that? Seems like a big enough deal for a story in a hockey mad city, imo. It was with Colorado and Vancouver.
*As long as you give CP a shout out, lol. edit: You don't have to do that.

Surprised that last night was the game that ended the streak. The Dome was way more packed then most games.

Anyone who has been to the Dome since 2010 knows that the sell out streak ended a long time ago.
This may just be when the owners stopped comping free tickets.

While I'm sure there hasn't been a true sellout in a long while, I have noticed the Fan960 pushing ticket sales every once in a while this season, so I assumed it had already officially ended too.

Yep, which is exactly what I said. I was just stating that it was surprising no one in Calgary picked up on it after it was such a big deal in Colorado and Vancouver where longer sellout streaks ended.

Does anyone know the math on that? I know Colorado's was quite long (like 400 some odd games). But Vancouver was since 2002 and our was since around the beginning of 2004, I believe, so not that much shorter than Vancouver.
Also, Colorado and Vancouver were both the same deal, with many fans and media questioning it for awhile leading up to the change and subsequent media stories.
Not making a huge deal of it, just more surprised our media hasn't picked up on it.

Canucks - 474 games
Av's - 487 (NHL record, so yeah point taken on that, Tyler)
Flames - 400 ish (someone could do the exact math, but that was just a quick estimate factoring in the sellouts starting around the mid way point of the 03/04 season, then taking into account playoffs and the shortened season.
So not that much less than those two, but definitely a couple seasons total.
Anyone know if they count pre-season in those two streaks? I'm assuming not, but if so then we'd get another 15 games or so.

Hopefully a media guy picks up on it, so we can see the official number of sellouts.

Make sure you give flameswin the credit for digging up attendance numbers.

I have a really hard time believing, even as bad as they are, that the Leafs, or even Habs for that matter, haven't sold out for much longer.

I was under the impression that attendance and ticket sales were seperate numbers. So while the tickets may have all been sold the dome may not have been at capacity.

Yeah, you're thinking of tickets sold vs tickets distributed. It seems teams are starting to move towards reporting tickets sold instead of inflating attendance with tickets distributed.
The flames, like many teams were "distributing" unsold tickets and then reporting sellouts. Although, I wouldn't be surpised if the flames are still distributing many unsold tickets even at 19095. There's typically many hundreds if not thousands of empty seats each night, not 200.

The Leafs had a technical problem with their ticket system for a game in early 2002 and did not sell it out.

If someone is giving the Flames money for all seats, used or not, it's hard to begrudge them for claiming sell-outs.
