Default "Chirpin" - What crosses "the line"

I wasnt sure which forum to put this in or even if its been discussed before.

I want to talk about 'chirpin" in a hockey game.
Is there a point in time where the back and forth of words crosses a line? Is there a line.

I ask, because during a recent minor hockey game between midget players, the talk I heard from players almost made my jaw drop. In fact, I didnt think that it could get quite that bad. I'm not talking about "your mother forgot her wallet on my dressor" type comments. It was downright vicious to a point where they were making questionable comments about a player that got hurt.

So I ask you, is there a line? Where does it stop and become totally disrespectful and at what point should the referee start handing out unsportsmenlike penalties for it?

Race. 100% not acceptable.
Chirping about an injury that just happened would probably raise the likely hood of a two handed type of response.
I've never really heard anything that crosses the line in any of my games.

Anything personal. Race, etc. A guys wife and kids are off limits.

If you expect that you should probably get punched in the face for saying something, you probably shouldn't say it. Especially at the beer league, minor hockey level.

You can always tell who the biggest ###### on the ice is when guys are chirping about personal stuff in a rec league hockey game.

Race is a big one. I'm asian and some guy I got in a scrum with one game told me to go back to Asia in my Civic. We were chirping at each other the whole time leading up to, but I was quite taken aback by that one.

Never go after the ####### either unless you're looking to get your butt whooped. I almost got killed one time in tournament when said ####### tried to take my head off on an open ice check. He was an older guy, missing teeth, and probably their biggest guy. I chirped him and told he probably couldn't do it again skating at me with his walker. then I called him toothless wonderr. All that being said, I didn't go back on the ice after that. haha. I'm a much tamer player now.

Sorry to burst the bubble but the wife or SO is definitely fair game.

I'm basing this on what I heard from a couple NHLers interviewed a while ago about what is and isn't okay for chirping. Things like deceased relatives, children and race were off limits. Things like wives, girlfriends and nationality were ok. Maybe beer league are different but in the NHL pretty much anything goes.

All beer leagues games I have played in have been filled with the sort of performances that provide more than enough material for the other team to chirp.

I can't understand the need to chirp guys on anything other than their "game". If you need to go to the wife/GF/race, then there is a good chance that player is better than you and you should shut your face and work harder.

NHL?????
Yeah, if we're getting paid to play, the scope of what I'm willing to do/say to get an advantage goes up.
I don't think there are many on this board at that level.
I'm not prepared to lose my teeth in a 10pm beer league game for talkin smack.

Then you ain't ever gonna make the show. As we all know there are a large number of scouts out at any arena after 10 pm..

in the men's league i play we've had a few 'incidents'

one was with my team. we've got an east indian guy on my team and the other team definitely crossed the line. one guy was going on that he should probably get out of the rink becuz he'll be late for his shift at 7-11. then another guy was "trying to hail a cab" from the bench. the straw that broke the camel's back was a pack1 comment or something like that. a line brawl ensued.

all 3 guys from the other team got suspended (two for the rest of the season, the other for a few games). one of my guys got suspended for threaten a guy while in the penalty box - it was ugly.

another incident (not with my team) was two guys had been going back and forth for a bit. the one guy was at the point while the other guy was on the bench. the dude on the bench made some kind of comment that the other guy 'better make sure his front door is locked tight becuz he was going to come over and rape his daughter'. yea.... that didn't end well. the guy who said it was tossed from the league

there have been other 'race' things said and the offender is always suspended for at least the remainder of the season, if not longer. they don't want that crap in the league

one of the worst groups for way over the top chirping is the women's divisions. my jaw dropped a couple of times while score keeping their games.

on a different level, i've asked a couple nhler's about chirping and i've heard the recurring theme.... you get your idiots like avery, burrows, etc. that constantly run their mouths, but other than that, the only guys that chirp a lot are usually the young kids. the players that have been in the league for a while realize they need to grow up.... and put up or shut up!

Oddly enough, thats what happened. Our kid grabbed said individual and got in a couple of good ones before the linesmen broke it up. In most cases, the referee would toss our kid from the game. Here he got a 2 min roughing penalty. Referee skated over to me on the bench and told me that he heard exactly what the other kid said hence only the minor penalty.

Well that's an awkward choice of words. ha
unintentional I'm sure, made me chuckle though.

Race and hate based smack are big time out.

Family, and especially mamma's are in.

I've always said don't say anything if you can't stand the applause sound that your beating makes.

I was the king of pretty vile smack talk, there were certain lines I didn't cross, and I could back my stuff up.

But everyone knows that its pretty much only a game and its all in good fun. If your in a beer league and you go berzerk about someone asking you if his breath smells like yer mamma, then you should really stop playing the game.

In general I find that adult hockey is WAY to serious. Honestly, aside from skill related jabs etc do you really need to go further? Every beer league game has ZERO meaning on life - its just a rec game. The extent some guys take it is dumbfounding. The last thing i want to do at 12:00 on a Tuesday evening is be run up by some ass-hat with a full cage on. As a general observation as well, the worse the caliber of player, the higher the ###### factor. don't see much BS in div 1/2...when it happens its usually ends in a fight. Div 4/5...well that's a bunch of over dressed tough guys with little respect for anyone on the ice.

For later-aged kids who potentially have somewhere to go with there hockey careers then its a different standard for me. Attack the player for anything you want, just make sure its about the player/team not a blanket statement about something else (eg race).

This. It's beer league. The number of blockheaded losers that take their chirping to another level blows my mind. Grow up. What exactly are you trying to prove?

No slapshot clips yet?

NSFW!

I would say nothing but race is excluded. But that I don't get, calling someone out for their sexual preference as the above video shows (hell even if it's true or not) seems to still to this day be acceptable.
