QOTD: Setoguchi Situation
The Flames have some tough decisions to make should they get healthy up front. Setoguchi had the flu but is available again. Jones is skating and soon to return.
The easy first move is to jettison Jooris back to the AHL. He's been solid, but his move to the fourth line with Stajan and Byron moving up the roster is telling in my opinion.
But after that where are we with the Setoguchi vs a Grandlund/Ferland/Baertschi/Reinhart option? Many said he needed more than the preseason, but now he's had 9 games of regular season action, was out once and a scratched 4 times and has no points and -2 in four starts.
When does his time run out?

I think he gets a couple more games to get things going and if not, he's done. He's done pretty much nothing since the day he laced up his skates for the first time here. Unless he has a big game or 2 upon his return, I don't think he makes the lineup for the remainder of the season. But no harm, no foul. We all knew it was a low risk signing at the time and that this was a likely outcome. No bad cap hit to speak of and only 1 year term. I would have preferred to see him have a bounceback season and flip him for a pick at the deadline. But I don't think he even gets a last round pick at this point.

The game in Winnipeg was telling for me. In that second period when the Flames starting moving the puck quite well he was fumbling it all over the place. Kind of feel bad for the guy, almost seems like nerves are as big an obstacle as his play.

Gonna be waivered and sent to AHL if he doesn't get something done soon - he's taking up a valuable roster spot while not contributing at all. Jooris has done more.

I'd agree save for Jooris sliding down the roster anyway. If he was still top 9 and Setoguchi was ready to come back he could be in trouble. But with Byron serving notice that he's not a scratch or a fourth line guy Hartley has really changed the Flames forwards look.

Honestly I think he's done with the Flames. He might get a game or two once he's healthy, but he's most likely heading to the AHL.
The silver lining to this is that the Addy team seems to really be missing some veteran leadership right now. I think Seto could potentially fill that role nicely and provide some scoring for the minor team.

Whatever happen to this guy? He was one of my favorite in San Jose and even took him in my playoff hockey which I end up winning. He was good back then (offensively and defensively). Then he left for Minnesota and he just went downhill and couldn't recover. It was a low-risk signing and came in cheap. With Jooris playing well and Gaudreau starting to pick up his games, I think he is the candidate to get sent down to AHL or release outright. Seto should maybe try playing in Europe. Maybe he'll have success over there and gain his confidence. Too bad I was hoping he'd be a steal for us. Oh well.

I think Jooris moving to the fourth line makes sense. Third line should contribute offensively and the fourth should bring a ton of energy. Jooris fits better than setoguchi in all respects.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

Send Setoguchi down. He and Jooris were both given an opportunity. Jooris has done something with it and Setoguchi didn't.

QOTD: Setoguchi Situation
The baby Flames are dying for veteran presence. I think it would be best for both parties if he were put on waivers and sent down. He's not gonna rediscover his game from the press box.

Need another option. Put on waivers, clears waivers, and sits in pressbox for majority of year.

Whether he is in the A or with the big club he is cheap insurance. That is all.

What I would like to happen (Setoguchi sent down and the open spot is used to incentivize, reward and evaluate various AHL players - Ferland, Jooris, Baertschi, et al) is different than what I think will happen (Setoguchi gets until after Christmas/half-way point/allstar game which allows for additional time in the AHL for prospects which is Treliving's mantra).

I'm not sure he passes through waivers guaranteed. He is a body for NHL teams looking to address injury situations and need a rotational with speed and veteran experience.
Would love to see him in Abby with the kids, but who knows how it will play out.

He'll clear waivers very rare someone doesn't clear waivers and it isn't guys like Setoguchi who get claimed.

That flu seemed to set everyone back on their heels, but just like Mony said it's no excuse. I think it really depends on what Hartley sees. Is the effort there?
My guess is if he cannot impress soon then it's not over, but he can compete with the AHL squad for another call up.
edit ~ and if we lose him of waivers so be it, good luck unless it's Van or Edm

I can't see a team wanting a veteran player waived from Calgary. I might be wrong (there was that one time), but I just can't see it.

Hard to believe you can go from 30 goals and 65 points as a sophomore to out of the league at 27.
I guess the lifestyle of partying caught up to him, because even as good as Thornton made him look, he was never completely useless as he is now.
