Friedman's 30 Thoughts - Oct 28
Main point is about Carlyle and he compares him to Hartley's situation.
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/3...-all-to-blame/
Other interesting tidbits:
Flames were heavily scouting the blues early in the season:
Quote:
2. The Blues are in an interesting spot. A contender going through some transition. The new setup in goal is well-documented. The defence is reasonably set. What’s getting less attention are the changes up front. Jaden Schwarz is establishing himself as a top scorer. Vladimir Tarasenko is growing from a 15-minute player to a 17-minute player. Once he gets healthy, Paul Stastny will be a major piece. Depending on how this evolves, will Doug Armstrong quietly gauge the market on some of his incumbent forwards?
3. Calgary had a serious presence at a couple of the Blues’ early games, but it doesn’t seem like anything is going on.
|
Quote:
5. Two years ago, when Marc Bergevin took the Canadiens’ job, he said he got plenty of calls about Lars Eller. Not sure that’s changed. Now that Alex Galchenyuk is moving towards being a full-time centre, other teams are wondering what Bergevin’s plan is.
6. Nail Yakupov scored his second of the season in that win. There’ve been a lot of rumours about his future, but I confess I haven’t heard anything substantial. After a week of looking into it, here’s my best guess: he’s not untouchable, but the Oilers asked him to show more commitment in the off-season and on the ice. So far, he has delivered. It sounds like Edmonton wants to reward that. Dallas Eakins is trusting him in late-game one-goal leads, something that never would have happened a year ago.

If the Blues are looking to move veterans as their young guys push their way into the lineup, I hope the Flames stay away from trades. The only interest there would be taking a young emerging guy, if they were favouring veterans

Bit of love for the Flames & Hartley:
Quote:
Really, is it any different than what’s going on in Calgary? Over the past 13 months, Bob Hartley’s seen the man who hired him replaced by two levels of authority — Brian Burke and Brad Treliving. Hartley is in the final year of his contract; there is no guarantee he’s back.
Despite that, he always looks in control. Hartley benches Dennis Wideman and what happens? Upon returning, Wideman has a chance to tie a record for most consecutive games with a goal by a Calgary defenceman.
Whatever the individual Flames may think, they play hard. Very hard. I’m not sure who’d win a seven-game series between Calgary and Toronto, but I do know this: on Day 2 of the season, the Flames began a 7,000 kilometre, six-game road trip through Edmonton, St. Louis, Nashville, Chicago, Columbus and Winnipeg. They won four of those games.
Any team would take that.
Goaltending? Absolutely. But they compete, and their best players (especially on defence) tend to be their best players.

I could see the Blues perhaps being interested in one of Ramo or Hiller if they still have some of the same concerns about their goaltending that was the reasoning for acquiring Ryan Miller.
But that trade probably doesn't even come close to happening until near the trade deadline.

Well, FWIW, TJ Oshie has been struggling as of late. Pretty sure we wouldn't make a move for him though.

Interesting rumour on the Blues, looking at that roster up and down there isn't a whole lot there that I could see them wanting to trade that the Flames would be interested in.
Ty Rattie? Very unlikely because he's terrible.
Berglund? Why would the Flames want him?

The price would be out of reach. I like him a lot though.

Good write up, but why does everything have to be Leafs centric?
"Hartley is a great coach kind of like Carlyle"
"The Flames have new management this season, exactly like the Leafs actually. The former Leafs GM is now the Flames boss! Isn't that cool!?"
"The Flames had a great road trip, boy wouldn't it be cool if the Leafs had a road trip like that?"
"Flames and Leafs seven game series would be neat to watch."

Getting a player like that would boost the rebuild quite a bit. If there is any chance that he is on the market, the Flames should be interested.

We could use a RW like him. But as we've all mentioned, the price would be steep. It'd be better to just keep our assets.

People are too sensitive about this. The Leafs merit more national attention - that is simply good business. Plus the comparisons between the Flames and Leafs right now, given their current states and similar coaching situations - is precisely on point.

Also, a lot of casual hockey fans in Eastern Canada do not pay attention to the teams out west. I think Friedman is trying to give them a point of reference to understand Flames.

I'ev got no idea what they'd want. But I can't think of a deal that makes sense.

Exactly - if anything Calgary and in particular Gio/Brodie have been getting an unusual amount of love.

While I've never been in them myself, I think the seats behind the players bench must be the worst seats in the house. Too close in to see any real plays develop, and there are always a few bozos in front of you who refuse to sit down.

it is kind of neat to hear the ice level chatter but you spend the entire game just watching the jumbotron.

I don't see the Blue moving Backes, so if it's a veteran forward that's tradeable I'd guess Oshie or Berglund. But Oshie would cost a lot, and I don't know that Berglund is really an upgrade on Colborne at this point. And the Blue clearly wouldn't want a forward coming back, and the only players on our d they'd want are untouchable, so they'd probably want a d prospect coming back. I just don't see a fit.

Why is Ty Rattie terrible?
He'd instantly be our 2nd best RW prospect. Some may argue 1st.
