Default MikroTik Routers

My routers have always seemed to crap out prematurely or require resetting far too often. When doing some skimming online, answers for good quality often seem to point to MikroTik.

They sound fast and reliable but seem to be terribly beginner unfriendly. It appears basic usage can be grasped fairly simply, but advanced features (I barely know what advanced feature are) requires advanced knowledge/experience. They have a wiki page to help out, as there is little/no English manuals included.

Does anyone have any experience with these?

They are not user friendly at all, but if you do figure them out there aren't many better routers out there.

I think they only cost $99 too, which is a great price for what they offer.

This is the one we have.

Great, thanks. I'm up for the challenge then if it gets me a good router. If you see this thread bumped in the next month, I'll likely be hanging my head in shame.

From my experience they have great range too and simply just work.

Might not be as good as some of the newer .ac routers in terms of speed, but I find its more than enough for me.

I went through the same pain and did some research. My research led me to Ubiquiti routers and AP's, some consensus is that ubquiti has better hardware. Same problem/advantage, not beginner friendly but once set up pays off in spades.

This is what I have: EdgeRouter Lite - 3 port router (goes to an existing 24 port switch so didn't need more ports) and Unifi Long Range AP.

Work well together, stable and super fast. One AP has given coverage on three floors of my house easily, where before I had to use two or three AP's.

Ubiquiti has some great stuff as well. Also much better than the mainstream routers on the market.

I'm seriously considering going the ubiquiti route now but wondering about running cable for the AP. Will the AP signal strength still be okay inside a closet or hallway?

Yes, the Ubiquiti AP has remarkable penetration. Especially the LR model.
