[News] Dennis Wideman healthy scratch for tonight's game against EDM
Quote:
Wideman, who pulls down a salary of $5.25 million, will sit against the Edmonton Oilers. Raphael Diaz draws in.
|
Quote:
The Flames coach was asked about sitting someone like Wideman, a veteran commanding millions in pay.
“I’m not a banker, I’m a coach,” replied Hartley.
|
Quote:
“My message is very clear — we’re going to carry 23 bodies,” said Hartley. “And (Wednesday), it’s not like we had three kids sitting. We’re going to keep playing our young players. But, again, always remember — it has always earned and never given.
“You want to be in the lineup for every game for the 82 games, you’ll have to show up for the 82 games. Free ice time doesn’t exist in Calgary.”

Glad to see that management is holding players accountable for their play. The fact that we are sitting our highest paid D man in only game 2 shows to everyone that if you don't play and give your best every night their will be consequences.
Respect.

I still think he's tradeable. Maybe this is going to send a msg to him, either shape up or waive your NTC.

What the hell happened to him? Before his injury (I think it was a broken hand?) last year he was playing awesome. Since then he's looked lost, even in the offensive zone which is where he's supposed to be good.

Love it.
First Jones and Setoguchi, now Mr. Wideman.
This is deserved. I also assume this will give him a nice wake up call.
Players now KNOW that this is a what have you done for me lately situation. Don't play well, expect to watch from the press box.
Seriously refreshing.

Very happy this happened, now everyone on the team knows if they're not giving 100% they will be enjoying some popcorn from a box upstairs.

I don't know how much this has to be reiterated, but he has an NMC and three years left on his contract.
He's going to have to play lights out and attract the attention of a playoff contending team to do anything remotely actionable with him, and likely have to cover part of his salary to increase his worth.
Ergo, we are stuck with him for the next little while.

No big deal, we have many players that started v Canucks that will probably get their turn sitting down.
Good for competition. I agree with cody that Wideman looked great at the start of last year.

Yeah it really seems he never recovered from that. Rarely do you see someone lose his game so completely. I mean he had his warts, but this is I think way beyond normal variation or "wheels falling off from an older dude". At 31 he's not really that old even.
Meh. I don't know.
Maybe he just really doesn't want to play for a rebuilding team. As many have mentioned, he came to town while Iggy was still here and we were theoretically still competing for the playoffs. Tough to say.
In any case, it's a good message from Hartley.

Hope he can turn it around, be nice if he can play well enough to turn around some assets.

He's a healthy scratch, not being benched. Benched is when you dress and get...benched.
Just wanting to point out the difference.

He probably just needs some time to work out the rust and round into form.
I dont think we can trade him though, if we do where the hell are we in terms of the cap?
